Biography

Short Description

Saint Tiburtius, whose name appears in some later sources as Tibertius, is numbered among the early martyrs of Rome. He is known almost exclusively from the fifth-century Acts of Saint Cecilia, a hagiographical romance that enjoyed wide circulation in the Middle Ages but is not regarded by modern historians as a reliable contemporary record. In that narrative Tiburtius is presented as the brother of Valerian, a young pagan of senatorial rank who had been betrothed to the Christian Cecilia. After Valerian's conversion and baptism by Pope Urban, he persuaded Tiburtius to receive instruction and baptism as well. The two brothers thereafter spent their time burying the bodies of martyrs and performing other works of mercy.

According to the same passio they were denounced and brought before the urban prefect, who ordered them to sacrifice to the gods. When they refused they were condemned to death. An officer named Maximus, assigned to lead them to execution, was himself converted by their example and by a vision, and was subsequently beaten to death. Tiburtius and Valerian were beheaded at a site four miles from Rome along the Via Appia. Cecilia later recovered their bodies and buried them in the cemetery of Praetextatus. The historical existence of martyrs of these names is supported by the early Roman itineraries and by the Depositio martyrum, but the family relationships, the role of Pope Urban, and the dialogues and miracles of the Acts cannot be confirmed from independent third-century evidence.

A second Roman martyr named Tiburtius is commemorated on 11 August. The brief notice in the martyrologies states that he was put to the test of walking on burning coals and, remaining unharmed, was then beheaded; he was buried on the Via Labicana. Medieval writers and some liturgical books occasionally confused or combined the two figures. Precise years of birth and death for either martyr remain unknown; the traditional association of the Cecilia group with the pontificate of Urban I (222-230) is derived solely from the legendary Acts and is not independently verified.

The feast of Saints Tiburtius, Valerian and Maximus is entered in the Roman Martyrology on 14 April. Relics attributed to them have been venerated in the basilica of Santa Cecilia in Trastevere and elsewhere in Rome. Neither martyr is the object of a widely attested later patronage of particular places, professions or causes, and both belong to the large number of pre-Constantinian Roman saints whose cult is ancient but whose biographies rest on late and largely unhistorical texts.
