Biography

Tiburcio Arnáiz Muñoz was born on 11 August 1865 in Valladolid, Spain. He studied for the priesthood in his native diocese and was ordained a priest of the Archdiocese of Valladolid in 1890. For more than a decade he remained a diocesan priest, serving in parish ministry and as a professor at the seminary in Valladolid. In 1902, already an experienced priest in his late thirties, he entered the Society of Jesus and began Jesuit novitiate and formation. He later made his solemn profession in the order.

After joining the Jesuits he was assigned to pastoral work in Málaga. There he became known as a preacher and as a priest who sought out the urban poor and the neglected rural districts of the region. Early twentieth-century Andalusia was marked by poverty, seasonal labor, and a shortage of resident clergy in many villages. Arnáiz devoted himself to missions, catechesis, and the sacraments among people who had little regular contact with the Church, and he worked to revive parish life where it had declined.

In Málaga he collaborated with María Isabel González del Valle in founding the Missionaries of the Rural Parishes (Misioneras de las Parroquias Rurales), a congregation dedicated to evangelization and Christian formation in country parishes. The foundation, in the early 1920s, reflected his conviction that rural communities needed lasting catechetical care, not only occasional itinerant missions. The institute was intended to provide women religious who could remain among the people and sustain instruction after visiting missionaries had left.

Arnáiz died in Málaga on 18 July 1926. A cause for beatification was later introduced in the Diocese of Málaga. Pope Francis recognized his heroic virtue in 2016, conferring the title Venerable, and subsequently approved a miracle attributed to his intercession. He was beatified in Málaga on 20 October 2018 in a rite celebrated in the name of Pope Francis. His liturgical memorial is kept on 18 July, the anniversary of his death. He has not been canonized.
