Biography

Short Description

Saint Tikhon of Lukh (Tikhon Lukhovskoy), also called the Kostroma Wonderworker, is a monastic saint of the Russian Orthodox Church whose biography is known chiefly from later hagiographical tradition rather than from contemporary chronicles. He was born in the middle of the fifteenth century in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, of Orthodox Christian parents of noble standing. The exact year and town of his birth are not preserved in surviving sources. Traditional accounts state that, troubled by the difficulties faced by the Orthodox population in Lithuania, he left his homeland and went to Moscow, where he entered military service under Grand Prince Ivan III Vasilyevich.

In time Tikhon abandoned military life and the secular world. He received the monastic tonsure and sought solitude. After a period of wandering he settled as a hermit in a forested region on the Lukh River in the Kostroma lands of the Grand Duchy of Moscow (now in Ivanovo Oblast). There he practiced fasting, vigil, and manual labor. Disciples gathered around him, and he founded a monastery dedicated to Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker, later known as the Nikolo-Tikhonov or Lukhovsky Monastery. He was remembered for humility, meekness, and care for the poor.

Tikhon died on 16 June 1503 and was buried at the monastery he had established. In the later sixteenth century his relics were uncovered and reported incorrupt; healings were attributed to his intercession. Local liturgical veneration developed, and he was numbered among the wonderworkers of the Kostroma region. The Russian Orthodox Church commemorates him on 16 June according to the Julian calendar. He held no episcopal office and was neither patriarch nor pope.

The monastery remained a pilgrimage site for centuries, was closed in the Soviet period, and has been associated with later restoration of monastic life. Because the written sources for his life are late and conventional, many personal details—a precise birth year, the names of his parents, or any family life before tonsure—cannot be verified from independent historical documents. His place in Orthodox memory is that of a late-medieval Russian monastic founder and local wonderworker.
