Biography

Short Description

Tikhon of Zadonsk, known in the world as Timofey Savelyevich Sokolov, was born in 1724 in the village of Korotsk in the Valdai district of the Novgorod region of the Russian Empire. His father, a poor church reader, died while Tikhon was still a child, leaving the family in destitution. The boy was sent to work for a peasant in order to earn his bread. Poverty was so acute that he later recalled going hungry and being tempted to abandon study for paid labor as a coachman; assistance from a local benefactor and the determination of his family allowed him instead to enter the Novgorod theological seminary. There he distinguished himself in Greek and rhetoric and, after completing the course, remained as an instructor in the same school during the 1750s.

In 1758 he was tonsured a monk with the name Tikhon and rapidly advanced in the church hierarchy. He served as archimandrite and rector of the Tver seminary before being consecrated in 1761 as vicar bishop of Keksholm and Ladoga. In 1763 he was appointed bishop of Voronezh, a vast diocese in the south of European Russia that had suffered from administrative neglect, the persistence of pre-Christian seasonal rites, and the presence of Old Believer communities. During his four years on the cathedra he preached frequently, sought to raise the educational level of the clergy, established schools, and worked to restore regular liturgical and parish life. The strain of travel and administration, together with chronic ill health, led him to petition for retirement, which was granted in 1767.

He first withdrew to the Tolshevsky Monastery and in 1769 settled permanently at the Monastery of the Nativity of the Theotokos in Zadonsk. There he lived not as a retired hierarch demanding honor but as a simple monk, occupying a modest cell, attending the services, and giving away almost all money and goods that came to him. He devoted himself to writing, to the spiritual direction of visitors, and to works of charity among the local poor and prisoners. His principal treatises, notably On True Christianity and A Spiritual Treasure Gathered from the World, together with numerous letters, set out a practical path of inner watchfulness, repentance, and love of neighbor; they circulated widely in manuscript and print and became standard reading in Russian Orthodox households and monasteries.

Tikhon died at Zadonsk on 13 August 1783. In 1846 his relics were uncovered and reported incorrupt, and in 1861 the Holy Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church glorified him as a saint. He is commemorated principally on 13 August. His combination of episcopal labors, monastic humility, and accessible spiritual writing made him one of the most influential Russian saints of the eighteenth century; later writers, including Fyodor Dostoevsky, drew on his example in depicting the figure of the Orthodox elder.
