Biography

Short Description

Titian of Oderzo, known in Italian as San Tiziano di Oderzo, was bishop of the ancient city of Opitergium (modern Oderzo) in the Veneto of northeastern Italy. Surviving notices of his life belong to later hagiographical and liturgical tradition rather than to contemporary seventh-century documents. That tradition places him in the late sixth and early seventh centuries and states that he was born at Eraclea (ancient Heraclea), a settlement of the Venetian lagoon, to a family of noble rank. No reliable source preserves the year of his birth or the names of his parents.

He is said to have been educated and formed in the clerical life under Floriano (Florian), bishop of Oderzo. Titian served that church as deacon and then as priest. Accounts of his ministry dwell on his charity: he is described as having given his own property to the poor and as having been known for care of the needy. After Floriano’s death he was chosen bishop of Oderzo. As bishop he is remembered for pastoral zeal, preaching, and continued works of mercy. His episcopate fell in a period when the Venetian plain still lay within the Byzantine sphere but was under growing pressure from the Lombards.

His death is traditionally dated to 16 January 632. He was buried in the cathedral of Oderzo. Within a generation the city was attacked and largely destroyed in the Lombard wars (commonly associated with the campaigns of the mid-seventh century), and the episcopal see was later transferred inland to Ceneda, now part of Vittorio Veneto. In the course of that upheaval Titian’s relics were translated from Oderzo to Ceneda, where they became a centre of local devotion. His cult is of the ancient, pre-congregational type; he was not the object of a formal papal canonization of the later medieval or modern kind.

Veneration remains strongest at Oderzo, of which he is the patron saint, and in the historic diocese linked with Ceneda and Vittorio Veneto. His feast is kept on 16 January. Apart from the traditional outline—birth at Eraclea, clerical service and episcopate at Oderzo, death in the early seventh century, and the later translation of relics—little can be established from strictly contemporary evidence. He belongs to the group of local Italian bishop-saints whose memory was kept by diocesan liturgy, relic cult, and the movement of sees after the Lombard conquest rather than by a detailed early vita.
