Biography
Tomás Morales Pérez was born on 30 October 1908 in Macuto, Venezuela, to Spanish parents who were residing in that country at the time. The family later returned to Spain, where he spent his formative years, received his education, and completed studies in law. He discerned a vocation to religious life, entered the Society of Jesus, and was ordained a priest. His life and ministry unfolded in Spain across much of the twentieth century, including the years of the Spanish Civil War and the postwar period.
As a Jesuit priest, Morales devoted himself especially to the spiritual formation of the laity. He founded the Cruzadas de Santa María, a secular institute whose members live a consecrated life while remaining in the world, together with related groups such as the Hogares de Santa María for families and the Milicia de Santa María. These foundations sought to foster holiness among ordinary Catholics in their professional, familial, and social circumstances, in a spirit consistent with mid-twentieth-century Catholic teaching on the vocation of the laity and with themes later emphasized at the Second Vatican Council.
Morales also wrote on Christian spirituality, encouraging Eucharistic devotion, personal conversion, and active lay participation in the Church’s mission. He continued to guide the institutes he had established into his later years. He died on 1 October 1994 in Madrid, Spain.
After his death, those associated with his foundations promoted recognition of his life of virtue. The cause for beatification was opened in the Archdiocese of Madrid, and he is regarded as a Servant of God. His legacy continues through the secular institutes and movements he founded, which remain active in formation and apostolate.
