Biography

Short Description

Tomás Sitjar Fortiá was a Spanish Jesuit priest of Catalan origin martyred during the religious persecution that accompanied the Spanish Civil War. Associated with Girona in Catalonia, he entered the Society of Jesus and was ordained a priest, living under the vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience characteristic of the order. The Jesuits had a long history in Spain of educational and missionary work, though they also faced periodic expulsions and suppressions. Sitjar Fortiá’s life unfolded against the backdrop of late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century Spain, a period of political instability, secularizing reforms, and growing tensions between the Church and various republican, socialist, and anarchist movements.

The Second Spanish Republic, proclaimed in 1931, enacted strongly anticlerical legislation, including the dissolution of the Jesuit order within Spain. Many members of the Society continued their apostolates under difficult conditions. When military revolt and civil war began in July 1936, uncontrolled violence against clergy erupted in Republican zones. Thousands of priests and religious were killed, often without trial, in what the Church has described as a martyrdom in hatred of the faith. Tomás Sitjar Fortiá was among those who lost their lives in 1936.

Subsequent ecclesiastical investigations collected evidence of these deaths. Tomás Sitjar Fortiá was beatified by Pope John Paul II, who recognized numerous Spanish Civil War victims as blesseds in ceremonies during his pontificate. He is therefore known as Blessed Tomás Sitjar Fortiá. Because he belongs to a large group of martyrs rather than standing as a uniquely prominent individual saint, detailed personal anecdotes, writings, or miracle accounts specifically attached to him are scarce in general historical literature.

No particular patronages of places, professions, or causes are widely attributed to him, nor is a distinctive individual feast day prominently observed apart from commemorations of the Spanish martyrs as a whole. Information concerning the precise location of his burial is not readily verified in standard sources. His story illustrates both the scale of clerical suffering in 1936 Spain and the later efforts of the Catholic Church to honor those who died rather than abandon their faith.
