Biography

Short Description

Tommaso Bellacci was born in Florence in 1370 to a family of modest means. Traditional accounts of his youth describe a dissolute life marked by gambling, drunkenness, and other vices; some later biographies also mention a period of military service. He was at one point imprisoned, though surviving sources do not establish with certainty whether this was for debt, disorder, or another cause. Either during that confinement or in its aftermath he underwent a conversion that redirected the rest of his life toward penance and the religious state.

After his conversion he entered the Third Order of Saint Francis. Seeking a stricter observance, he asked to be received among the Observant Franciscans, the reform current within the Friars Minor then taking root in Tuscany, notably around the convent of Fiesole. He was accepted as a lay brother and assigned humble offices of the house, including cooking and the porter’s duties. Hagiographical tradition stresses his austerity, long prayer, and willingness to accept menial labor and contempt as reparation for his earlier life.

Bellacci became associated with leading Observant preachers of his generation. He is reported to have accompanied Saint John of Capistrano and Blessed Albert Berdini of Sarteano on apostolic journeys in Italy. He is also credited with missionary work in the eastern Mediterranean, including Crete and other territories under Latin or Venetian influence, in a period when Observant Franciscans were active both in Western reform preaching and in contacts with Eastern Christians around the time of the Council of Florence. The detailed itinerary and results of these missions are known mainly from later pious biographies rather than from a dense contemporary documentary record.

He spent his last years in the Observant religious life and died on 31 October 1447 at Rieti, in the Papal States. Devotion to him continued in Franciscan circles. Pope Clement XIV confirmed his cult and beatified him in 1771. He is commemorated on 31 October. He was never formally canonized, and standard martyrologies do not attach a developed list of patronages to his name. The outline of his life—the converted sinner who became a humble Franciscan brother and missionary companion—is consistent across Catholic biographical collections, though many anecdotal details belong to the hagiographical tradition rather than to independently verified chronicle evidence.
