Biography

Short Description

Tommaso da Olera was born Tommaso Acerbis in 1563 in the mountain village of Olera in the Valle Seriana near Bergamo, then in the Republic of Venice. He came from a poor rural family and spent his youth as a shepherd, receiving almost no formal schooling. Drawn to the austere life of the Capuchin reform of the Franciscan order, he entered the Order of Friars Minor Capuchin at Verona around 1580 as a lay brother rather than as a candidate for priestly ordination. He took the religious name Tommaso and remained a converse friar for the rest of his life, occupied with humble domestic offices while cultivating an intense hidden life of prayer.

For several decades he lived in Capuchin houses of northern Italy, including Verona, Vicenza, and the Bergamasque region. Although he was never ordained, his reputation for holiness, spiritual discernment, and mystical experience spread among clergy and laity. Within the convent he learned to read and write and composed spiritual letters and treatises marked by affective devotion to the Passion of Christ, the Eucharist, and the Virgin Mary, in the Capuchin current of Catholic Reformation piety. Contemporaries regarded him as a counselor and attributed to him gifts of prophecy and miraculous graces. He encouraged practices of penance and prolonged Eucharistic adoration.

In 1619 he was sent to Innsbruck in the County of Tyrol at the request of the Habsburg court. There he served as spiritual director to Archduchess Anna Caterina Gonzaga, widow of Archduke Ferdinand II of Tyrol, and advised other members of the ruling family. He remained in Innsbruck until his death, living according to Capuchin poverty while exercising influence on court religion in the early decades of the Thirty Years’ War. His career illustrates the role of Capuchin lay brothers as confessors and spiritual guides in early seventeenth-century Catholic courts.

Tommaso died in Innsbruck on 3 May 1631 and was buried in the Capuchin church of that city, where a local cult of veneration developed. The cause of beatification advanced slowly. Pope John Paul II recognized his heroic virtue and declared him Venerable. Pope Francis authorized his beatification, which was celebrated in Bergamo on 21 September 2013, with Cardinal Angelo Amato presiding as papal legate. The Catholic Church commemorates him on 3 May. He has not been canonized and is honored as Blessed Tommaso da Olera (Thomas of Olera).
