Biography

Short Description

Saint Trillo, whose name also appears in later sources as Drillo or Drel, is a Welsh saint customarily assigned to the sixth century. Almost all that is known of him derives from medieval Welsh genealogies, from church dedications, and from place-names, rather than from any contemporary Life or charter. According to the collections of saintly pedigrees known as Bonedd y Saint, Trillo was a son of Ithel Hael o Lydaw, a nobleman associated with Brittany (Llydaw). The same tradition states that Trillo came to Wales with Saint Cadfan as part of a larger company of Breton ecclesiastics and their kin. Brothers attributed to him in these pedigrees include several other local saints of Gwynedd and neighbouring regions, among them Tanwg, Twrog, Tegai, Llechid and Gredifael. Historians treat these genealogies as evidence of how the medieval Welsh church remembered its founders, not as independently verified family history, and no document from Trillo’s own century names him.

The geography of his cult is clearer than his biography. Two settlements in north Wales preserve his name: Llandrillo-yn-Rhos, now Rhos-on-Sea in Conwy County Borough, and Llandrillo in Edeirnion, Denbighshire. At Rhos-on-Sea a small stone chapel, Capel Sant Trillo, stands on the shore over a freshwater well. The building is frequently noted as one of the smallest ecclesiastical structures in Britain and is traditionally regarded as occupying the site of the saint’s hermitage. The well was venerated as a holy well, and the chapel continued in local use for devotion. The parish church of Llandrillo-yn-Rhos is dedicated to Trillo, as is the church at Llandrillo in the Dee valley. The llan- formations themselves are among the oldest types of Welsh ecclesiastical place-name and imply that a cult of Trillo was established at both sites at an early date, even though the standing fabric of the churches is later.

No reliable source records the year of Trillo’s birth or death, the town of his birth, or the place of his burial. Writers who place him in the sixth century do so because they associate him with Cadfan and with the so-called Age of Saints in Wales, not because a dated obit survives. He is not known to have been a bishop, and he was neither pope nor patriarch. Later piety has pictured him as a hermit beside the well at Rhos, which would imply a monastic or eremitical rather than a married household life, but that picture is an inference from the chapel and from the general pattern of early Welsh saints, not a statement found in an early text. Welsh liturgical calendars have kept his feast on 16 June. He was not the subject of a papal canonization or beatification of the kind that became usual in the later Middle Ages; like other Celtic saints of his era, he was recognised by local cult and liturgical commemoration.

Trillo’s lasting importance is therefore local and toponymic. The survival of Capel Trillo and of two church dedications shows that he mattered to the communities of the north Welsh coast and of Edeirnion, and that his name was still powerful when those churches received their medieval form. Modern scholarship can affirm the antiquity of the cult and the consistency of the Breton-origin story in the genealogies, while remaining honest that the man himself remains obscure. He belongs to the large company of early medieval Welsh saints whose memory is carried by the landscape and by later compilations rather than by a recoverable personal history.
