Biography

Short Description

Trojanus of Saintes, known in French as Saint Trojan or Saint Troyen, was a bishop of Saintes in western Gaul in the early sixth century. Saintes, the ancient Mediolanum Santonum, was the principal city of the Santones and the seat of a diocese that had already produced several venerated bishops, among them Saint Eutropius, regarded as the first bishop of the see, and Saint Vivianus, whom Trojanus is said to have succeeded. The region had passed from Roman to Visigothic and then to Frankish control in the generations before his episcopate. No reliable source records the year or place of his birth, nor the date on which he became bishop. Later tradition, followed by many modern notices including standard martyrological summaries, assigns his death to the year 532. He belongs to the generation of Merovingian-era prelates whose names and reputations for holiness were preserved more by liturgical memory and by the historical writings of Gregory of Tours than by any contemporary biography.

The principal early witness to Trojanus is Gregory of Tours, writing in the later sixth century. In his Glory of the Confessors, Gregory presents Trojanus as a bishop of outstanding sanctity, noted for piety and for a reputation for miraculous power. Gregory’s notices of Gallic confessors are typically brief and anecdotal: they confirm that a cult already existed and that the bishop was remembered as a holy man, but they do not supply a connected life. No sixth-century vita written by a disciple or contemporary has survived. Later medieval and early modern hagiographers sometimes added genealogical claims or catalogues of wonders, but these elaborations cannot be controlled by independent evidence and should be treated with caution. Nothing certain is known of Trojanus’s family, education, or participation in the councils of the Frankish church.

According to the tradition that fixed his feast, Trojanus died at Saintes and was buried there. The Roman Martyrology commemorates him on 30 November as a bishop of great holiness at Saintes. His cult remained essentially local. A church in Saintes bore his name, and the toponym Saint-Trojan-les-Bains on the Île d’Oléron reflects the extension of his dedication in the surrounding country of Aunis and Saintonge. Relics associated with him were kept and honored in Saintes during the Middle Ages. Like other holy bishops of the Merovingian period, he was venerated as a saint long before the papacy developed a centralized process of canonization; his cult is therefore classed as pre-congregational.

Modern historical study can affirm little more than that a bishop named Trojanus occupied the see of Saintes in the first half of the sixth century and that he was already regarded as a confessor-saint within a few decades of his death. The scarcity of sources is typical for many Gallic bishops of this era. What remains is the outline of an episcopal career in a provincial city of Frankish Gaul, the testimony of Gregory of Tours to his reputation for holiness, and a continuous local liturgical commemoration on 30 November. That modest dossier is the verifiable historical core of the figure known as Trojanus of Saintes.
