Biography

Short Description

Saint Trudo (also known as Trudon, Tron, Trond, or Trudjen) was a seventh-century Frankish priest, missionary, and monastic founder, traditionally styled the Apostle of Hesbaye. He was born in the pagus of Hasbania (Hesbaye) in Austrasia, in the eastern Frankish kingdom, at or near the estate later called Zerkingen (Latin Sarchinium), now within the Belgian city of Sint-Truiden. No contemporary record preserves an exact year of birth. Later hagiography, beginning with a life attributed to Donatus of Metz and written around 780, and expanded in the eleventh century by Abbot Theodoric of Saint-Trond, names his parents as the Frankish nobles Wicbold and Adela and associates them with the kin of Pepin of Landen. The same legends relate that an angel announced the child’s future sanctity to his parents. These genealogical and visionary details cannot be confirmed independently and belong to the conventional repertoire of early medieval vitae.

Trudo is said to have been educated under Saint Remaclus, abbot of Stavelot-Malmedy, and to have been ordained priest by Saint Chlodulf (Clodulphus), bishop of Metz. Returning to Hesbaye, he worked as a missionary priest among a rural population that was still only partly Christianized. On family land at Zerkingen he founded, around the middle of the seventh century (a date often given as about 656), a church and monastery dedicated to Saints Quintinus and Remigius. He became the community’s first abbot. A settlement grew around the house and in time took his name, becoming the medieval town of Sint-Truiden (French Saint-Trond) in present-day Limburg. The original observance was typical of seventh-century Austrasian foundations and was later regularized under the Rule of Saint Benedict; later tradition therefore counts Trudo among Benedictine abbots.

He died at his monastery, according to the date most often given in modern reference works, about 698, and was buried in its church. His feast is kept on 23 November, the day assigned in the Roman Martyrology and in local calendars. A cult developed at the tomb; relics were later translated and the abbey became an important religious and intellectual centre of the Low Countries, producing further lives of its founder. Historical knowledge of Trudo remains almost entirely dependent on these hagiographical texts, written a century or more after his death. The outline—a noble Frankish origin in Hesbaye, priestly formation connected with Metz and Stavelot, and the foundation of a monastery that generated the town of Sint-Truiden—is consistent with the ecclesiastical landscape of seventh-century Austrasia, while precise chronology and miraculous episodes cannot be verified. He is the patron saint of Sint-Truiden.
