Biography

Short Description

Tryphon (Greek: Tryphon) was a tenth-century monk of the Eastern Church who served as Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople from December 928 until August 931. Reliable information about his birth, family, and early years has not survived. Later Orthodox tradition describes him as a monk from Asia Minor, already advanced in age and known for humility and an austere manner of life when he was called to the patriarchal throne. He does not appear among the prominent clerical or aristocratic lineages of the capital, and no contemporary source records a precise place or date of birth. He lived as a monk rather than as a court cleric, and nothing certain is known of any particular monastery to which he belonged before his elevation.

The circumstances of his appointment were political. After the death of Patriarch Stephen II in 928, Emperor Romanos I Lekapenos wished to secure the see of Constantinople for his son Theophylact, who had been marked out for an ecclesiastical career from childhood. Theophylact was still a boy, and consecrating him at once would have been irregular. Romanos therefore selected Tryphon, a monk of uncontroversial reputation, to occupy the patriarchate on a temporary basis until Theophylact reached a more acceptable age. Tryphon was installed in December 928. The arrangement reflected the strong influence of the Lekapenoi over the Church in this period and the emperor’s determination to bind the patriarchate to his dynasty.

Tryphon’s brief tenure is thinly documented. Chroniclers depict him as a simple and pious man, more a monk than a court prelate, and they do not credit him with major synods, doctrinal definitions, or lasting administrative reforms. In 931 the court moved to replace him. According to an account preserved in later Byzantine historiography, Tryphon refused to resign unless a synod declared him canonically unfit. Imperial agents then resorted to a stratagem: they asked him to write his name on a blank sheet in order to prove that he was literate, and afterwards filled in a deed of abdication above his signature. He was deposed in August 931. Whether every detail of this story is accurate cannot be confirmed, but the outline is consistent across the tradition: Tryphon was removed to make way for the emperor’s son. Theophylact was not immediately enthroned; the see remained vacant until early 933, when the young Lekapenos was installed as patriarch.

After his deposition Tryphon returned to monastic life. He died in 933. The Eastern Orthodox Church numbers him among the saints and commemorates him on 19 April. He is remembered chiefly as a holy monk placed, and then discarded, in a struggle over control of the Constantinopolitan see, rather than as a major theological or political actor. Surviving notices are short, drawn mainly from Byzantine chronicles and later synaxaria, and many aspects of his biography—his exact origins, the monastery to which he belonged, and the place of his burial—remain unknown.
