Biography

Short Description

Je Tsongkhapa Lobsang Drakpa (1357–1419), often called Je Rinpoche, was a Tibetan Buddhist monk, philosopher, and the founder of the Gelug school. He was born in 1357 in the Tsongkha region of Amdo in northeastern Tibet, a locality later marked by Kumbum Monastery. Traditional biographies name his father Lubum Ge and his mother Shingza Acho. In early childhood, according to those accounts, the Fourth Karmapa, Rolpe Dorje, conferred lay vows and a name while traveling through Amdo. As a boy he received novice ordination from the local teacher Chöje Döndrup Rinchen and the name Lobsang Drakpa, by which Tibetan sources know him. After preliminary study in Amdo, including religious and practical subjects taught in the region, he left in his mid-teens for Ü-Tsang (central Tibet) to seek the major teachers and monastic colleges of the late fourteenth century.

In central Tibet, Tsongkhapa studied across the established orders rather than within a single college lineage. He trained in Vinaya, Abhidharma, Prajñāpāramitā, Madhyamaka, and Buddhist epistemology and logic (pramāṇa), and he received tantric transmissions from masters associated with the Sakya, Kadam, and Kagyu traditions, among others. A central scholarly mentor was the Sakya teacher Rendawa Zhönnu Lodrö. Tsongkhapa became known for close reading of Indian śāstras, for debate, and for a Prāsaṅgika Madhyamaka interpretation of Nāgārjuna and Candrakīrti that later defined Gelug scholasticism. He also spent extended periods in retreat, including a well-attested phase of intensive practice in the Olkha region. Gelug hagiography describes visions of Mañjuśrī in that period as guiding his view of emptiness and his approach to tantra; historians treat those reports as part of the later sacred biography while agreeing that retreat and systematic study were both central to his career.

From the first decade of the fifteenth century he gathered disciples and created institutions that became the core of the Gelug order (also called the Gandenpa, after his monastery). In 1409 he founded Ganden Monastery (Ganden Namgyal Ling) east of Lhasa and inaugurated the Monlam Chenmo, the Great Prayer Festival, in Lhasa. His writings form a large, internally ordered corpus. The Lamrim Chenmo (Great Treatise on the Stages of the Path to Enlightenment) presents a graded path indebted to Atiśa and the Kadam tradition. The Ngakrim Chenmo treats the stages of tantra. Philosophical works include the Essence of True Eloquence, on the distinction of interpretable and definitive meaning, and the Ocean of Reasoning, a commentary on Nāgārjuna’s Mūlamadhyamakakārikā, together with other treatises, letters, and liturgical texts. Throughout, he insisted on strict monastic vinaya, long study of Indian sources, and the restriction of highest yoga tantra to practitioners who had that foundation.

Tsongkhapa died in 1419 at Ganden Monastery. His remains were enshrined there. Abbacy of Ganden passed to close disciples, notably Gyaltsab Je and then Khedrup Je, in a line that became the Ganden Tripa, the throne-holder of Ganden. The Gelug school grew into one of the principal traditions of Tibetan Buddhism; its colleges later trained figures including the Dalai Lamas. He is commemorated especially on Ganden Ngamchoe, the anniversary of his death on the twenty-fifth day of the tenth Tibetan month. Traditional Gelug sources identify him as an emanation of Mañjuśrī. Historically he belongs to the Phagmodrupa period of central Tibet: a fully ordained, celibate scholar-monk whose synthesis of Kadam lamrim, Prāsaṅgika Madhyamaka, vinaya reform, and institutionalized monastic education had lasting effects on Tibetan Buddhist learning and on the later political-religious role of the Gelug order.
