Biography

Short Description

Saint Tychon (also rendered Tycho) of Amathus was a Christian bishop on the island of Cyprus in the later fourth and early fifth centuries. The received hagiographical tradition places his birth in Amathus itself, an ancient city on the southern coast long associated with the cult of Aphrodite. His family is described as Christian and of modest means; his father is said to have been a baker, and the child was raised with instruction in the scriptures and in works of charity, including the distribution of bread to the poor. These particulars belong to later liturgical lives rather than to contemporary documentary records, and no verified year of birth survives. Independent evidence for his early years is lacking, but the outline of a local Cypriot cleric who rose in the church of his native city is consistent across Eastern synaxaria.

Tychon entered the service of the Church at Amathus under Bishop Mnemonius, who ordained him deacon. After Mnemonius’s death he was chosen as successor. Some versions of the life state that he was consecrated by Saint Epiphanius of Salamis, metropolitan of Cyprus (died 403), which would place the start of his episcopate before that date. As bishop he is remembered for pastoral care and for opposition to remaining pagan worship. Amathus had been a major center of Aphrodite’s cult; the vita credits him with the destruction of idols and the conversion of many inhabitants. He is portrayed as an ascetic wonderworker, though he was a diocesan bishop rather than a member of a later named religious order. No reliable source documents a spouse or children.

The miracle most closely attached to his name concerns a vine. When wine was lacking for the Eucharist, Tychon is said to have planted a dry or unripe vine which immediately produced grapes sufficient for the liturgy. The story, repeated in Eastern synaxaria, later associated him in popular devotion with vineyards and the vintage, but formal, historically documented lists of patronages are not securely established in early sources. Other wonders of healing and of provision for the poor are attributed to him in the same tradition. Beyond these liturgical narratives, contemporary non-hagiographical testimony for specific episodes of his career is scarce.

Tychon died at Amathus according to the received chronology in 425 and was buried in his own city. A church in his honor stood at Amathus, and his cult remained local to Cyprus before spreading more widely in the Byzantine world. He is commemorated on 16 June in the calendars of the Eastern Orthodox Church and appears on the same date in the Roman Martyrology. Later Cypriot figures, including Saint John the Merciful, patriarch of Alexandria, are said to have held his memory in honor. He was an ancient saint of pre-congregation cult; no individual pope or later process of canonization or beatification is recorded. Precise dates other than the traditional year of death, and many details of the vita, cannot be verified outside the hagiographical tradition.
