Biography
Franziska Nisch was born on 18 September 1882 in the village of Oberdorf, then in the Kingdom of Württemberg in the German Empire and now part of Mittelbiberach in Baden-Württemberg. She was the eldest of eleven children in a poor Catholic family; her father worked as a day laborer. Poverty shaped her childhood. She received only a basic elementary education and was sent out to work as a domestic servant from a young age in order to help support the household. In 1904, while employed as a maid, she fell seriously ill with erysipelas and was treated in hospital by nuns of the Sisters of Charity of the Holy Cross. Their care and example awakened her desire to enter religious life.
She entered the congregation at its convent in Hegne, on Lake Constance, in October 1904. After postulancy and novitiate she received the religious habit on 24 April 1907 and took the name Sister Ulrika. She was assigned to kitchen work and served as a cook in several houses of the congregation, including those in Bühl and Baden-Baden, as well as at Hegne. The labor was humble, repetitive, and physically demanding, yet she was remembered by her sisters for cheerfulness, humility, and a quiet fidelity to prayer amid ordinary duties.
Sister Ulrika’s health was always fragile. She contracted tuberculosis, which steadily weakened her. In her final period of illness she returned to the motherhouse at Hegne, where she died on 8 May 1913 at the age of thirty. Her life had been short and outwardly hidden, but those who knew her testified to a deep interior union with God and to patience in suffering. After her death a popular reputation for holiness grew, and people began to visit her grave and to seek her intercession.
The cause for her beatification was introduced in due course. Pope John Paul II beatified her on 1 November 1987 in Saint Peter’s Square in Rome. Blessed Ulrika Nisch is commemorated on 8 May, the anniversary of her death. She is remembered as an example of holiness lived in concealed, everyday work rather than in public office or dramatic deeds. Her remains are kept at the convent of the Sisters of Charity of the Holy Cross in Hegne, which became a place of local pilgrimage after her beatification.
