Biography

Short Description

Humbert III, Count of Savoy, known in Italian as Umberto III di Savoia and traditionally called the Blessed, was born in 1136 at Avigliana in Piedmont, in the ancestral lands of the House of Savoy. He was the son of Count Amadeus III of Savoy and Mahaut (Matilda) of Albon. In 1148 Amadeus III died while returning from the Second Crusade, and the boy Humbert succeeded as count. During his minority the county was guided by his mother and by ecclesiastical allies. From youth he showed a strong inclination toward prayer and the cloister rather than toward the ordinary business of a territorial prince, a temperament that later chroniclers made central to his reputation.

As an adult he remained a reluctant secular ruler. He was closely tied to the Cistercian abbey of Hautecombe, founded by his father on the shore of Lac du Bourget, and he repeatedly sought to withdraw from public life into monastic observance. Political necessity and the insistence of vassals and kinsmen kept him from taking religious vows, and he never formally entered an order. He married four times, chiefly to secure the succession and regional alliances. His first wife, Faidiva of Toulouse, died without children in the mid-twelfth century. A second marriage, to Gertrude of Flanders, daughter of Count Thierry of Alsace, was childless and was later dissolved. His third wife, Clementia of Zähringen, bore him daughters. After her death he married Beatrice of Viennois (also known as Beatrice of Mâcon), who became the mother of his heir, Thomas, afterward Count Thomas I of Savoy.

In government Humbert faced the expansion of imperial power under Frederick I Barbarossa and the shifting loyalties of the north Italian communes and of neighboring Burgundian and Provençal lords. Control of the Alpine passes made Savoy strategically important. Relations with the emperor were often strained; imperial forces invaded Savoyard territory in the 1170s, and the count suffered losses and isolation at various moments. He generally sided with the papacy in the conflicts of the age. Contemporary and later accounts stress his personal austerity, his almsgiving, and his endowment of churches and religious houses, even while conceding that he was not a notably successful military or diplomatic prince.

Humbert died on 4 March 1189, according to the principal Savoyard and Italian historical tradition at Chambéry, and was buried at Hautecombe Abbey, which became the dynastic necropolis of his house. He was succeeded by his son Thomas I. A local cult grew up around the count, based on his reputation for piety and on miracles reported at his tomb. The Catholic Church confirmed that cult when Pope Gregory XVI beatified him in 1838. His feast is kept on 4 March. In Savoyard memory he remains the type of the Christian prince who preferred the religious life, though he died a lay count and not a professed monk.
