Biography

Short Description

Umiliana de' Cerchi was born in 1219 in Florence, in the medieval Tuscan republic, into the Cerchi, a wealthy Guelph family of merchants and bankers who later figured in the factional struggles of the city. Her father was Oliviero de' Cerchi. As was customary for a young woman of her rank in the thirteenth century, she was married in her mid-teens. The union lasted only a few years and produced two daughters. Her husband died while she was still a young woman, leaving her a widow with children in a society that typically expected noble widows either to remarry or to enter a convent.

After her husband's death Umiliana wished to join the Poor Clares, the enclosed Franciscan nuns founded by Clare of Assisi. Her family, however, opposed a cloistered vocation and sought to arrange a second marriage that would serve the Cerchi family's interests. Unable to enter the Second Order, she took the habit of the Third Order of Saint Francis, the penitential lay association that allowed men and women to live the Franciscan life in the world. She then withdrew to a chamber in the family's tower-house in Florence, transforming it into a cell in which she lived as a recluse, combining enclosure with remaining legally a widow under her father's roof.

In that setting she practiced prayer, fasting, and charity toward the poor of Florence. A life of Umiliana was composed shortly after her death by the Franciscan friar Vito da Cortona; it is among the earliest hagiographical accounts of a Franciscan tertiary and records visions, austerities, and a reputation for holiness that spread in the city. She died in Florence on 19 May 1246, aged about twenty-seven, and was buried in the Franciscan church of Santa Croce, where her tomb became a focus of local devotion and reported miracles.

Her cult remained alive in Florence and among the Franciscans. In 1694 Pope Innocent XII confirmed her public cult, an act treated as equivalent to beatification. She is commemorated in the Franciscan and local calendars on 19 May. Umiliana de' Cerchi is remembered as an early and well-documented example of the medieval Franciscan tertiary vocation: a noble widow who, barred from the cloister, fashioned a life of penance and charity within the urban household of her own family.
