Biography

Short Description

Saint Ursicinus, known in French as Saint Ursanne and in German as Sankt Ursitz, was an early medieval Irish monk, hermit, and missionary active in the Jura region in the first decades of the seventh century. Almost nothing about his life can be established from documents written in his own lifetime. The portrait that has come down to us is that of later monastic tradition, which presents him as a disciple of Saint Columbanus, the Irish founder of Luxeuil. Columbanus and his companions left Ireland toward the end of the sixth century and established a rigorous monastic life in Merovingian Gaul. Ursicinus is counted among those companions, though his name does not appear in the contemporary Vita Columbani of Jonas of Bobbio, the principal early source for the circle of Columbanus. His Irish origin and his connection with Luxeuil are therefore traditional rather than independently attested, but they have been accepted in the local cult and in standard hagiographical collections.

According to that tradition, Ursicinus remained in eastern Gaul after Columbanus was driven from Luxeuil by King Theuderic II of Burgundy around the year 610. He made his way into the valley of the Doubs, a rugged district of the Jura mountains corresponding to the present Clos du Doubs in the Swiss canton of Jura. There he took up the life of a hermit, dwelling in a cave or a simple cell beside the river. He is said to have preached the Christian faith to the inhabitants of the surrounding countryside, who were still imperfectly converted or only loosely attached to the Church. Followers gathered around the hermit, and a small monastic community came into being. That community is regarded as the origin of the monastery later known as the Abbey of Saint-Ursanne. The nearby settlement eventually took the saint's name and developed into the medieval town of Saint-Ursanne, which still occupies a bend of the Doubs.

No contemporary obituary or charter records the date of Ursicinus's death. Medieval and early modern martyrologies and local tradition place it about 620 or 625. He was buried at the site of his hermitage. Veneration of his tomb is already implied by the growth of the monastery and by the dedication of the place to his memory. In the high Middle Ages the abbey became a house of canons; the present collegiate church, with Romanesque and Gothic fabric, stands over the traditional burial place and remains the centre of his cult. His feast day is 20 December. Because the formal papal processes of beatification and canonization did not exist in the seventh century, Ursicinus belongs to the large number of saints whose cult was established by popular and episcopal veneration and later recognized as immemorial.

Later centuries elaborated the legend with miracles and with stories of his eremitical austerity, but these cannot be controlled by early evidence. The historical Ursicinus, so far as he can be glimpsed, belongs to the wider movement of Irish peregrini who helped to plant monastic life and pastoral care in the countryside of the Frankish kingdoms. The monastery associated with him eventually adopted the Benedictine rule, like many Columbanian foundations. Relics attributed to the saint have been kept at Saint-Ursanne. He is the patron of the town that bears his name. No extensive additional patronages of particular trades, illnesses, or distant places are securely documented in the older liturgical and historical sources. Other holy men of late antiquity and the early Middle Ages also bore the name Ursicinus, including a legendary physician-martyr of Ravenna and several bishops; the subject of this notice is the hermit of the Doubs.
