Biography

Short Description

Ursula Ledóchowska, born Julia Maria Ledóchowska in 1865 at Loosdorf in Lower Austria, belonged to a Polish noble family living in the Austrian Empire. Her father, Count Antoni Halka-Ledóchowski, and her mother, Countess Józefina Salis-Zizers, raised their children in a strongly Catholic household. Two of her siblings also attained prominence in the Church: Maria Teresa Ledóchowska, foundress of the Missionary Sisters of St. Peter Claver and later beatified, and Włodzimierz Ledóchowski, who became Superior General of the Society of Jesus. After her father’s death the family settled at Lipnica Murowana in Galicia. In 1886 Julia entered the Ursuline convent in Kraków and received the religious name Ursula.

She taught in the Ursuline schools and later served as superior of the Kraków community. With ecclesiastical approval she went in 1907 to Saint Petersburg in the Russian Empire to take charge of a boarding school for Polish girls attached to the parish of St. Catherine, and she also established a house in the Grand Duchy of Finland. When the First World War began in 1914 she was expelled from Russia as an Austrian subject. She then worked in Sweden, Denmark, and Norway, founding educational institutions, assisting Polish refugees and émigrés, and supporting the small Catholic communities of Scandinavia.

After the restoration of Polish independence she returned to Poland. In 1920 the Holy See separated her sisters from the Ursuline Roman Union and erected them as the Congregation of the Ursulines of the Agonizing Heart of Jesus, popularly called the Grey Ursulines because of their habit. The new institute devoted itself to the Christian education of girls, the care of orphans, and service to the poor and to working women. Mother Ursula spent the interwar years founding convents in Poland and elsewhere in Europe and obtaining approval of her congregation’s constitutions. She died in Rome in 1939.

Pope John Paul II beatified her at Poznań in 1983 during a pastoral visit to Poland and canonized her in Rome in 2003. Her liturgical memorial is kept on 29 May. The principal shrine associated with her memory is the motherhouse of her congregation at Pniewy in Poland, where her remains were later translated.
