Biography

Short Description

Ursus of Ravenna, known in Italian as Sant'Orso, was bishop of Ravenna in the later fourth century and is venerated as a saint in the Catholic Church. Nearly all biographical detail about him derives from the Liber pontificalis ecclesiae Ravennatis, a history of the bishops of Ravenna written in the ninth century by Agnellus of Ravenna, together with the liturgical notice in the Roman Martyrology. Agnellus states that Ursus was a Sicilian by birth and of noble family. No contemporary source records his parentage, education, or year of birth, which remain unknown. Traditional episcopal lists, combining Agnellus’s statement that Ursus occupied the see for twenty-six years with the martyrological date of his death, place his tenure from about 370 until 396. Modern historians treat those exact years as approximate, because Agnellus’s chronology for the fourth century is often inconsistent with independent evidence.

The deed for which Ursus is remembered is the construction of a new cathedral for Ravenna. This church, dedicated to the Resurrection of the Lord (Anastasis) and thereafter called the Basilica Ursiana or ecclesia Ursiana, was a large five-aisled basilica. It replaced an earlier and smaller episcopal church and became the liturgical centre of the diocese. Agnellus, who still knew the building in the ninth century, describes marble columns, mosaic decoration, and the bishop’s burial near the altar. The original Ursiana basilica, much altered over the centuries, was demolished in the first half of the eighteenth century and replaced by the present cathedral of Ravenna, which occupies the same site. Archaeological work beneath the later cathedral has confirmed the existence of a substantial late-antique basilica consistent with the medieval description, even if the ornamental details reported by Agnellus cannot be independently verified.

According to the same tradition, Ursus died in Ravenna on 13 April 396 and was buried in the cathedral he had built. The Roman Martyrology commemorates him on that day. No writings by Ursus survive, and no contemporary account of miracles or of a formal canonization exists; his cult is of the ancient, pre-congregational type typical of early bishops honoured as founders of their churches. He is not to be confused with other saints of the same name, in particular Ursus of Aosta, a later abbot, or Ursus of Auxerre. Later medieval notices add little that can be checked against other evidence.

Ursus’s episcopate fell immediately before Ravenna’s sudden rise to political importance. In 402 the emperor Honorius transferred the Western imperial court from Milan to Ravenna, which then served as capital of the Western Roman Empire, of the Ostrogothic kingdom, and of the Byzantine Exarchate. The bishops who followed Ursus, among them Peter Chrysologus in the fifth century and Maximianus in the sixth, presided over a city of imperial rank, and the see itself was later raised to metropolitan and archiepiscopal dignity. The name of Ursus remained attached to the cathedral he had founded, and he continued to be honoured locally as one of the early fathers of the church of Ravenna, even though the recoverable facts of his life rest on a late and imperfect source.
