Biography

Short Description

Vakhtang I, remembered in Georgian tradition under the epithet Gorgasali, was a fifth-century king of Iberia, the Georgian kingdom of Kartli, and a member of the Chosroid dynasty. Almost everything known about him derives from later medieval Georgian historical writing, above all The Life of Vakhtang Gorgasali, a text attributed to Juansher Juansheriani and compiled centuries after Vakhtang’s lifetime. That work blends royal biography, epic combat narrative, and Christian hagiography, and modern scholarship therefore reconstructs his reign only in outline, while treating many anecdotal episodes as literary or legendary. According to the chronicle tradition, he was the son of King Mihrdat V of Iberia and of Sagdukht, daughter of a Mihranid ruler of Gardman. He is said to have come to the throne as a child, his mother serving as regent, and to have been raised as a Christian in a kingdom pressed between Sasanian Iran and the Eastern Roman Empire. The byname Gorgasali is customarily derived from a Persian expression meaning Wolf-head and is linked to the wolf-shaped helmet he wore in war.

Iberia in his time was a Sasanian vassal in which Zoroastrian influence at court competed with an already established Christian church. Georgian sources portray Vakhtang as spending much of his reign in military and diplomatic struggle to preserve the kingdom’s room for maneuver. He is described as fighting the Sasanians, campaigning in the Caucasus against the Alans, and seeking backing from Constantinople, including a journey to the Byzantine court and a marriage alliance. He is also credited with strengthening fortresses, especially Ujarma, which served as an important royal stronghold in the east of the kingdom. Historians accept that a vigorous Iberian king of this name did wage war on the Persian frontier and look to Byzantium, but they caution that the chronicle’s battle lists, speeches, and precise itineraries cannot be confirmed from contemporary Iranian or Roman sources.

Vakhtang’s name is bound up with two lasting institutions of Georgian history: the city of Tbilisi and a more independent Iberian church. Tradition holds that he founded Tbilisi and began to shift the political center of Kartli from the old capital Mtskheta toward the new town on the Kura, a change completed by his successors. The famous story that he discovered the site while hunting, when a falcon and a pheasant fell into a hot spring, is a later etiological legend explaining the name Tbilisi, from a Georgian word for warm. In church affairs the medieval accounts ascribe to him the enlargement of the episcopal hierarchy, the invitation of clergy from the Byzantine world, and the installation of a catholicos, moves interpreted as an attempt to give the Iberian Church a clearer autocephalous standing and to resist Persian religious pressure. He is remembered as a builder of churches and as a ruler who identified the monarchy with the defense of Christianity.

The same tradition states that Vakhtang married first Balendukht, a Sasanian princess, and after her death Helena, a woman of the Byzantine imperial connection, and that he left several children, among them Dachi, who succeeded him as king of Iberia. He died of a wound received in battle against Persian troops; Georgian narrative places the fatal campaign in his later years and his death at Ujarma. He was buried at Mtskheta, a site later identified with Svetitskhoveli Cathedral, the coronation and burial church of Iberian and Georgian kings. In the aftermath of his death Sasanian control over Iberia tightened. The Georgian Orthodox Church venerates him as a saint-king, with a feast on 30 November, and later Georgian historical memory has made him a symbol of royal resistance, Christian kingship, and the medieval origins of Tbilisi. Because the earliest full account of his life is late and literary, the exact years of his birth and death remain disputed among historians, who have proposed differing reconstructions of his chronology.
