Biography

Short Description

Valentin Interamnsky is the Slavic designation for Saint Valentine of Interamna (Latin: Valentinus Interamnensis), a Christian bishop of the Umbrian city of Interamna Nahars—modern Terni in central Italy—who is venerated as a martyr of the third century. Almost all that is known of him derives from later hagiographical literature, especially a Passio of uncertain date, rather than from contemporary Roman records. The Roman Martyrology commemorates him on 14 February as bishop and martyr, and the city of Terni has long claimed him as its principal patron. Historians generally treat the narrative details of his life as legendary, while accepting that a local martyr-bishop named Valentine was venerated at Interamna from late antiquity. No independent source records his year of birth or his family background; the epithet Interamnensis refers to his see and to the traditional association of his cult with that city.

According to the traditional Acts, Valentine served as bishop of Interamna and was reputed for holiness and for converting pagans. He is said to have been called to Rome by a philosopher named Craton, whose son suffered from a grave illness; Valentine healed the youth and converted Craton’s household, including students and members of the urban elite. These conversions, the legend continues, provoked the imperial authorities during the reign of Aurelian (270–275). Valentine was arrested, beaten, and beheaded at Rome, an event placed by later tradition in the year 273. Three of his disciples—often named Proculus, Ephebus, and Apollonius—are said to have recovered the body and carried it back to Interamna for burial. Those disciples themselves were later commemorated as martyrs. Shorter notices in martyrologies simply locate his memory at Terni, which has produced some variation in whether later writers describe the execution as taking place in Rome or in his own city.

A shrine developed at the tomb outside Terni. The present Basilica of San Valentino, south of the city, occupies the traditional site of his burial and remains the centre of his cult. Relics attributed to the saint have been kept there and, in various periods, translated or shared with other churches in Italy and beyond. Because a priest named Valentine of Rome is also commemorated on 14 February, Western devotion frequently fused the two figures. From the later Middle Ages the mid-February feast became associated with romantic love and betrothal, a patronage that Terni in particular has continued to attach to its bishop-martyr. He is also invoked in some traditions against epilepsy and related conditions. No reliable source records whether he was married or had children; such details cannot be verified for a third-century Italian bishop known only through legendary acts.

Valentine of Interamna was never canonized by a formal papal process of the later medieval type; his sainthood rests on ancient public veneration, commonly described as pre-congregation recognition. In the Eastern Orthodox churches he is honoured as a hieromartyr. Under the name Valentin Interamnsky he appears in Russian and other Slavic synaxaria, commonly on 30 July in the Julian calendar (12 August Gregorian), distinct from the Western date of 14 February. The duplication of feast days and the overlap with Valentine of Rome illustrate how early martyr cults were reshaped as they spread. For the historian, Valentine of Interamna remains an obscure third-century figure whose enduring importance lies in the continuity of his local cult at Terni and in the later, much wider association of his name with the mid-February celebration of love and marriage.
