Biography

Short Description

Valentín Berrio-Ochoa was a Spanish Dominican friar, missionary bishop, and martyr of the mid-nineteenth-century persecutions of Christians in Tonkin. He was born on 14 February 1827 in Elorrio, in the Basque province of Biscay in northern Spain. He entered the Order of Preachers, completed his religious and priestly formation, and was ordained a priest. Like many Spanish Dominicans of his generation, he volunteered for the Asian missions and was sent to the Dominican vicariate in Tonkin, in what is now northern Vietnam, at a time when the Nguyễn court under Emperor Tự Đức was enforcing severe edicts against Christianity.

In Tonkin he served among Vietnamese Catholics who lived under constant threat of denunciation, imprisonment, and death. He was appointed to episcopal office as vicar apostolic for Central Tonkin and was consecrated a bishop, becoming one of the Spanish Dominican prelates who led the mission after earlier superiors had themselves been killed. His ministry consisted of clandestine pastoral work: confirming the faithful, ordaining and supporting local clergy where possible, and holding together Christian communities during a period of intensified searches for foreign missionaries and native converts.

In 1861 he was arrested by imperial authorities. After imprisonment and the usual judicial process applied to captured missionaries, he was condemned to death. On 1 November 1861 he was beheaded at Hải Dương. He was thirty-four years old. His execution formed part of the same wave of killings that claimed other Dominican bishops and numerous Vietnamese clergy and laity in the years around the Franco-Spanish military interventions in Indochina.

He was beatified by Pope Pius X on 20 May 1906, in a group of eight martyrs that also included Bishop Melchor García Sampedro. On 19 June 1988 Pope John Paul II canonized him together with 116 companions as the Martyrs of Vietnam. The Church commemorates the group on 24 November. Berrio-Ochoa is remembered as a Basque Dominican who died as a missionary bishop in Tonkin rather than as a figure with an extensive surviving personal correspondence or a large independent cult apart from the Vietnamese martyrs as a whole.
