Biography

Short Description

Valentino di Genova, known in English as Saint Valentine of Genoa, is an early Christian bishop of Liguria venerated as a saint by the Catholic Church. Almost nothing about his life can be established from contemporary documents. The details that circulate in later catalogues and local Genoese tradition place him in the late third and early fourth centuries, as one of the first occupants of the see of Genoa, traditionally numbered as the third bishop after figures such as Saint Syrus (San Siro). His death is conventionally dated to 307 in Genoa. That year belongs to episcopal lists compiled long after the events they describe and should be treated as traditional rather than as a date confirmed by inscriptions or writings of the period.

No reliable source records his birthplace, family, or early career. He is not associated with a religious order; he appears in the tradition simply as a diocesan bishop. Whether he was married or had children is unknown. His episcopate, if the traditional sequence is accepted, would have fallen in the years around the turn of the fourth century, a time when the Christian community of the Ligurian coast was still small and when the last great Roman persecutions had only recently ended or were ending. The Edict of Milan followed a few years after the date assigned to his death. No sermons, letters, or administrative acts attributed to him survive, and there is no contemporary account of how he died.

The early history of the church of Genoa is itself largely legendary. Local tradition claimed very ancient, even apostolic, origins for the see, and a succession of holy bishops—among them Felix, Syrus, and Valentine—was later written into catalogues of the diocese. Historically secure bishops of Genoa appear only in later centuries. Valentine’s place in that list therefore reflects medieval and early-modern piety more than recoverable fourth-century biography. He should not be confused with the better-known Saints Valentine of Rome and Valentine of Terni, whose cults coalesced around 14 February.

His liturgical commemoration is ancient in the Genoese church. The Roman Martyrology records him on 3 May at Genoa in Liguria. He has not acquired a wide set of patronages of places, trades, or causes in the way that some other early Italian saints have; standard lists do not assign him a distinctive patronage beyond his connection with the church of Genoa. The principal patrons of the city and archdiocese remain other figures, notably Saint George, Saint Lawrence, Saint John the Baptist, and Saint Syrus. The location of Valentine’s burial is not securely documented in the sources commonly available. His cult is that of a local holy bishop of the pre-congregation era, recognized by long-standing public veneration rather than by a formal papal canonization of the later medieval or modern type.
