Biography

Short Description

Saint Valeria, commonly called Valeria of Milan, is an early Christian martyr known almost exclusively from later Latin hagiography rather than from contemporary documents. In the tradition of the Church of Milan she is the wife of the martyr Vitalis and the mother of the brothers Gervasius and Protasius, whose relics Saint Ambrose of Milan uncovered in 386 and whose cult became one of the most important in northern Italy. The written Passio that supplies her story is generally dated by scholars to the fifth century or later and is regarded as historically unreliable in its particulars; no inscription, chronicle, or sermon from the fourth century names Valeria. Consequently the years of her birth and death are unknown, and even the century of her martyrdom—often placed in the first or second century, under Nero or under later persecutions—cannot be verified.

The traditional narrative relates that Valeria and Vitalis were Christians of standing in Milan. Vitalis is said to have gone to Ravenna, where he encouraged fellow Christians and buried the bodies of martyrs. For this, and for refusing to sacrifice to the pagan gods, he was tortured and executed, according to some versions by being buried alive. Valeria, either while returning from her husband’s burial or while living as a widow in Milan, was ordered to eat food that had been offered to idols. She refused. Pagans then beat her, and she died of the injuries she received, thus sharing her husband’s martyrdom. The same cycle of legends identifies Gervasius and Protasius as their twin sons, who were later scourged and beheaded in Milan. These family relationships, though firmly established in medieval legendaries including the Golden Legend of Jacobus de Voragine, are not confirmed by Ambrose’s own preaching on Gervasius and Protasius, which has led historians to conclude that the parental story was a subsequent elaboration.

Despite the legendary character of the acts, liturgical veneration of Valeria is ancient. She is commemorated together with Vitalis on 28 April in the Roman Martyrology and in the Ambrosian tradition of Milan. Churches in Milan, Ravenna, and other Italian cities honoured Vitalis, and Valeria’s name was joined to his in calendars and dedications. She is not recorded as a member of any religious order; the sources present her as a married laywoman. She held no papal or patriarchal office. Her cult remained local and secondary compared with that of Gervasius and Protasius, whose discovery by Ambrose gave them a secure place in Milanese identity. Relics attributed to the family were claimed by various churches in the Middle Ages, but the provenance of any relics of Valeria herself is not securely documented.

Valeria of Milan should not be confused with other saints of the same name, above all Saint Valérie of Limoges (or of Aquitaine), a cephalophoric martyr of highly legendary character associated with Saint Martial and venerated on 9 December in the Limousin. Nor should she be identified with Galeria Valeria, daughter of Diocletian and wife of the emperor Galerius, who was executed in the early fourth century and is not the subject of a major liturgical cult under this name. Because so little about the Milanese Valeria can be controlled by independent evidence, statements about her birthplace, the exact site of her burial, and any specialized patronages cannot be verified. What can be said with confidence is that from late antiquity onward the Latin Church remembered a martyr named Valeria of Milan, wife of Vitalis and, in legend, mother of Gervasius and Protasius, and kept her feast on 28 April.
