Biography

Short Description

Valerio of Bierzo, known in Latin as Valerius Bergidensis, was a monastic writer and hermit of the Visigothic Kingdom who lived in the second half of the seventh century in the Bierzo (Bergidum), a rugged district in the northwest of the Iberian Peninsula, in present-day León, Spain. He belongs to the generation after the great monastic founder Fructuosus of Braga and is, with Isidore of Seville and a handful of others, one of the few literary personalities of Visigothic Spain whose own voice survives at length. Unlike the bishops who produced encyclopedic or conciliar texts, Valerio wrote as a hermit justifying his way of life, describing his sufferings, and instructing disciples. His works therefore illuminate not the royal court or the metropolitan sees but the contested world of rural oratories, private patronage, and local priests.

Neither a contemporary chronicle nor an epitaph records the year of his birth or death. Internal evidence from his narratives shows that he was already a convert and hermit in the middle decades of the seventh century and that he was still writing in its later years, so that a floruit in the second half of the century is secure. Tradition and modern scholarship usually associate his family origin with Astorga, the old Roman city and episcopal see that lay east of the Bierzo; he himself speaks of leaving his patria and the property of his parents in order to take up the ascetic life. He was literate in Latin and familiar with Scripture, hagiography, and some of the literature of the Eastern monks, which implies a schooling available to a boy of respectable family in an episcopal city. After his conversion he made his way into the Bierzo, a landscape already dotted with the monasteries and hermitages of Fructuosus, among them Compludo and the house at Rufiana that later became San Pedro de Montes.

The autobiographical trilogy on which his fame rests—the Ordo querimoniae, the Replicatio sermonum a primordio conversionis suae, and the Residuum—describes a succession of cells and a long series of misfortunes. Valerio lived at Castro Pedroso, then in a hermitage provided by a local benefactor, then on the height of Ebronanto, and finally in closer relation to the older Fructuosan communities. He presents himself as the victim of envious clergy, violent laypeople, and demonic assault. His oratory was wrecked, his books were damaged or stolen, and he was at times beaten and driven from his dwelling. These pages, written in an agitated and mannered Latin, belong to the ancient genre of the monk’s complaint and the desert struggle with demons, but they also document very concrete social tensions: the competition for pious patronage, the suspicion of bishops and parish priests toward unregulated hermits, and the fragility of a cell that depended on the goodwill of landowners. He gathered at least a small circle of disciples, including the monk John, a scribe for whom he composed works of spiritual warning and instruction.

Beyond the autobiographical dossier, Valerio wrote De vana saeculi sapientia, a treatise that contrasts the emptiness of secular rank and learning with the wisdom of the monks; a discussion of the kinds of monastic life; and a brief laudatory notice of the pilgrim Egeria, whose journey to the holy places he knew through her Itinerarium. He copied and circulated ascetic texts and stood in the literary tradition that linked Hispania to the Desert Fathers. He does not appear to have held any ecclesiastical office such as abbot or bishop; his authority was that of an elder hermit and teacher. No medieval liturgical calendar gives him a universally recognized feast, and he was not the subject of a formal papal canonization. In the Bierzo he has sometimes been remembered as a holy man, but his enduring importance is historical and literary. Editors from the early modern Spanish antiquaries through the twentieth-century studies of Consuelo Maria Aherne and Manuel C. Díaz y Díaz have treated his writings as a unique first-person record of Visigothic monasticism, valuable precisely because they are partisan, vivid, and unpolished rather than because they offer a serene hagiographical portrait.
