Biography

Short Description

The Latin name Valerius, taken from the Roman gens Valeria, was common in the imperial centuries and was later borne by several Christian bishops and martyrs. From the name alone, with no see, century, or companion given, a single historical person cannot be identified, and no field that would apply only to one homonym can be filled without conjecture. No Bishop of Rome and no Coptic Pope of Alexandria is recorded under this name, nor any Patriarch or Catholicos of an Orthodox, Oriental Orthodox, Coptic, or Church of the East see. Hagiographical usage most often points to one of three late-antique bishops—Valerius of Zaragoza, Valerius of Trier, or Valerius of Hippo—or, less often, to minor martyrs such as the Valerius commemorated with Rufinus in connection with Soissons. Their lives and cults are distinct.

Valerius of Zaragoza (Caesaraugusta in Hispania Tarraconensis) was bishop of that city in the early fourth century. The earliest substantial tradition is inseparable from the passion of his deacon Vincent. During the persecution associated with Diocletian and Maximian, the bishop, already described as aged and impeded in speech, was arrested with Vincent; Vincent was taken to Valencia and martyred, while Valerius was sent into exile rather than executed. No reliable ancient source preserves his year of birth, parentage, birthplace, or a controlled year and place of death in exile. His later cult became central to Zaragoza: relics attributed to him, especially a skull, were enshrined in the cathedral, and he is invoked as a principal patron of the city. The diocese of Zaragoza keeps his feast on 29 January. Marital status and children are unrecorded.

Medieval episcopal catalogues of Trier name a Valerius as an early bishop of Augusta Treverorum, commonly as successor of Eucharius. Later medieval vitae send Eucharius, Valerius, and Maternus from Rome in the apostolic age and include legendary wonders (including the raising of Maternus). Modern historical work treats that itinerary as pious legend and places an organized Christian community at Trier in the third century; a bishop Valerius in that sequence is possible but biographically irrecoverable. A feast on 29 January is associated with this Trier figure. Birth and death years, origin, burial, and family data are not historically verified.

A better-documented but less widely culted Valerius was bishop of Hippo Regius in Africa Proconsularis in the late fourth century. Augustine’s own writings and the Life of Augustine by Possidius present him as an elderly Greek-speaker who had difficulty preaching in Latin, who ordained Augustine to the priesthood (commonly placed about 391), and who obtained Augustine as coadjutor bishop. Valerius died in the 390s, after which Augustine governed Hippo alone. No ancient source gives this Valerius a birth year, birthplace, spouse, or children, and he is not the subject of a major independent feast in the universal calendars.

Because only the name Valerius was supplied, a verified birth year, death year, cities of birth and death, burial place, religious order, spouse, children, a unique feast day, and a unique list of patronages cannot be assigned. Bishops of this period were typically diocesan clergy, not members of a later religious order; whether any given Valerius had married before ordination is unknown. These late-antique cults arose by local veneration and martyrological reception, not by a modern papal canonization or beatification that can be named.
