Biography

Short Description

Saint Venerandus (French: Vénérand) was a Gallo-Roman bishop of Clermont in Auvergne, in what is now central France, during the later fourth and early fifth centuries. Surviving sources do not record the year or place of his birth. Tradition, already current in the sixth century, places him among the senatorial aristocracy of the Arverni, the same social milieu that supplied several of Clermont’s early bishops. He succeeded Saint Nepotianus in the see and is counted in the episcopal succession that later medieval catalogues traced back to Saint Austremonius, the legendary first evangelist of Auvergne. His lifetime fell in the last generations of Roman administration in Gaul, as imperial authority in the west weakened and the churches of the cities assumed a larger civic as well as spiritual role.

The chief ancient witness to his memory is Gregory of Tours, writing in the sixth century. In his Glory of the Confessors Gregory presents Venerandus as a holy bishop of senatorial rank and records that miracles were sought and reported at his tomb. Gregory does not supply a precise chronology. Later episcopal lists of Clermont assign Venerandus’s death to 423, a date repeated in martyrologies and in modern liturgical notices; it rests on those catalogues rather than on a contemporary chronicle. No sermons, letters, or other writings of Venerandus are known to survive, and the narrative of his episcopate is correspondingly thin. What can be said is that he governed the church of the Arverni in a period when the Christian topography of Clermont was still being formed, between the age of Saint Illidius (Allyre) and the mid-fifth-century building activity associated with Bishop Namatius.

He is traditionally said to have built a church, dedicated in the first instance to the Virgin Mary, in which he was afterwards buried. That church, outside the older urban core of Clermont, came to bear his own name and is remembered as Saint-Vénérand. Local veneration of his relics is already implied by Gregory’s account of the tomb. The cult remained regional. The Roman Martyrology commemorates him on 1 January at Clermont in Auvergne; some older local calendars also associate him with 24 December, perhaps in connection with a translation of relics. He was not the subject of a later papal process of canonization; his honours belong to the immemorial episcopal cults of late antique Gaul.

Beyond this outline almost nothing can be verified. Whether he was married, whether he had children, and the details of his pastoral government are unrecorded. He should not be confused with other, even more obscure bearers of the name Venerandus in martyrologies, nor with the female saint Veneranda. His historical profile is that of a fifth-century city bishop of senatorial background, remembered in Auvergne through Gregory of Tours, the episcopal lists of Clermont, and a long-standing local feast.
