Biography

Short Description

Venerius was bishop of Milan in the first decade of the fifth century, succeeding Saint Simplicianus, who had himself followed Saint Ambrose. Episcopal catalogues of the Milanese church place the start of his government about 400 and his death in 408 or 409; those two years both appear in modern reference works, and no contemporary inscription or chronicle fixes the date more tightly. Nothing reliable is known of his family, birthplace, or career before the episcopate. He is therefore attested only as metropolitan of a see that was still among the most influential in the Latin West, even after the imperial household had begun to prefer Ravenna. Milan retained a large clergy, a distinctive liturgical tradition associated with Ambrose, and metropolitan claims over much of northern Italy.

The episode of his pontificate that can be documented from contemporary correspondence is the Western response to the deposition of John Chrysostom. After Chrysostom was expelled from Constantinople, he wrote to Venerius, to Chromatius of Aquileia, and to other Italian bishops, asking that they recognise his communion and intercede for him. Venerius joined the western emperor Honorius in appealing to Pope Innocent I. Innocent held a synod at Rome, declined to accept the Eastern sentence, and wrote in Chrysostom’s defence. The relevant letters, transmitted with the Chrysostom corpus and in Roman canonical collections, are the principal surviving witnesses to Venerius’s public action. They show the church of Milan acting together with Rome and the court on a disputed Eastern case, not as an independent patriarchal see.

His years as bishop coincided with severe military pressure on Italy. Alaric’s first invasion in 401–402 shook the north, and in 402 Honorius transferred the court from Milan to Ravenna. The city remained a major ecclesiastical centre, but it was no longer the ordinary residence of the emperor. No sermons, treatises, or synodal acts of Venerius survive, so his pastoral measures, ordinations, and handling of refugees or discipline cannot be reconstructed in detail. Early sixth-century writers such as Ennodius of Pavia praise him among the holy predecessors of the Milanese line in conventional panegyric, without adding independent biographical facts. The catalogues name Marolus as his successor.

Venerius was venerated as a saint from late antiquity. The Roman Martyrology commemorates him on 4 May with the notice of a bishop at Milan, and the Ambrosian calendar preserved that local cult. He is not associated with a religious order, a verified marriage or children, a known tomb, or a list of patronages. Later notices of relic translations are too late and too inconsistent to identify a burial place with confidence. He must be distinguished from the Ligurian hermit and abbot Saint Venerius (San Venerio) of Palmaria and the island of Tino, a different figure whose traditional feast is 13 September and who is invoked as patron of the Gulf of La Spezia and of lighthouse keepers. For the Milanese bishop, neither a verified year of birth nor a single agreed year of death can be given from the sources that meet a strict historical standard.
