Biography

Short Description

Venturino of Bergamo, known in Italian as Venturino da Bergamo, was born on 9 April 1304 in Bergamo, in Lombardy in northern Italy. In adolescence he entered the Order of Preachers, receiving the Dominican habit at the convent of Saint Stephen in Bergamo on 22 January 1319. His formation took place within the Dominican tradition of study, preaching, and conventual life that had taken deep root in the Italian communes of the early fourteenth century. He lived thereafter as a celibate mendicant friar under religious vows; no marriage and no children are recorded.

From the later 1320s he emerged as one of the notable popular preachers of northern Italy. Between about 1328 and 1335 he preached in the cities of Lombardy and neighbouring regions, calling hearers to penance, conversion of life, and peace amid the endemic factional violence of the age. His reputation for austerity and eloquence drew substantial crowds, and he became a public figure whose activity extended well beyond the walls of any single convent.

In February 1335 he undertook a penitential pilgrimage to Rome, originally with only a small band of companions. The journey rapidly became a mass movement. Medieval reports, which should be treated with caution as to exact figures, describe tens of thousands joining the company by the time it passed through Bologna and arrived in Rome on 21 March 1335. The size and suddenness of the pilgrimage provoked alarm. Venturino was accused of heresy or of stirring unrest, and the episode ended in disappointment rather than in the spiritual renewal he had sought. He then proceeded to the papal court at Avignon. Pope Benedict XII received him, caused his doctrine to be examined, and on 13 June 1335 granted him a letter authorizing him to preach.

In the following decade he continued in the Dominican apostolate. Under Pope Clement VI he was charged, around 1343, with preaching a crusade against Turkish forces in the eastern Mediterranean, in the same broader context as the Latin capture of the harbour of Smyrna in 1344. He travelled to Smyrna and died there on 28 March 1346 while engaged in that work. He held no episcopal, patriarchal, or papal office. Later Dominican memory has sometimes honoured him as blessed, but standard historical references do not record a clearly documented formal canonization or beatification by a named pontiff, nor a universally observed feast or a defined list of patronages.
