Biography

Short Description

Veranus of Cavaillon, known in French as Saint Véran and in Italian as San Verano, was bishop of Cavaillon in Provence during the second half of the sixth century. He is more securely attested than many local saints of Merovingian Gaul. His name appears among the subscribers of the Council of Paris held in 573, which shows that he already occupied the see of Cavaillon by that year. Gregory of Tours, writing later in the same century, mentions Veranus as bishop of Cavaillon and records his reputation for sanctity and for miraculous healings. Cavaillon was an ancient Gallo-Roman civitas in the lower Durance valley, and its bishopric belonged to the ecclesiastical province of Arles. In Veranus’s lifetime the region formed part of the Frankish kingdoms after the absorption of Burgundian and Provençal territories, and its bishops took part in the conciliar life of the Frankish church.

No contemporary source gives Veranus’s date or place of birth, the names of his parents, or a detailed account of his early life. Later medieval and early modern hagiography, which must be treated with caution, describes him as a man of noble stock from the Vaucluse and as a hermit who lived in solitude near the great spring of the Sorgue, at the site now called Fontaine-de-Vaucluse, before being raised to the episcopate. In that tradition he is remembered as a pastor distinguished by charity to the poor and by the defense of his people. Associations in later legend with other Provençal holy bishops of the sixth century, such as Siffredus of Carpentras, are possible but not documented in sixth-century texts. There is no reliable evidence that he belonged to a named religious order, and no contemporary record of a wife or children survives.

Popular devotion, especially along the Sorgue, attached to Veranus the legend of the Coulobre, a dragon or monstrous serpent whose name derives from the Latin coluber. The beast was said to dwell in the chasm of the Vaucluse spring, to poison the waters, and to ravage flocks and inhabitants. According to the story, the bishop confronted the creature and overcame it by prayer and the sign of the cross, driving it from the spring or destroying it, after which the countryside was delivered. The tale is a regional instance of the episcopal dragon-slaying motif well known in southern Gaul, comparable to other Provençal dragon legends, and historians regard it as folklore that grew up around the saint’s tomb and the dramatic landscape of the fountain rather than as a historical incident. It nevertheless shaped his local image and the dedication of churches in the Vaucluse.

Tradition places Veranus’s death about 590, presumably in his episcopal city. He was buried at Cavaillon, where the cathedral, later under the joint dedication of Notre-Dame and Saint Véran, became the principal shrine of his relics. His cult remained strong in Provence; the village of Saint-Véran in the Queyras and the sanctuary at Fontaine-de-Vaucluse reflect the spread of his name in the surrounding mountains and valleys. In the Middle Ages a cult of San Verano also took root in northern Italy, notably at Albenga in Liguria and in Tuscan localities such as Peccioli; whether these Italian cults honor the bishop of Cavaillon or a homonymous saint is still discussed by historians. Veranus was never canonized by a formal papal process of the later medieval type; his feast entered martyrologies through ancient local veneration and is commonly observed on 19 October. He is the patron saint of Cavaillon and is closely linked with Fontaine-de-Vaucluse.
