Biography

Short Description

Saint Verena, known as Verena of Zurzach, is a Christian holy woman of the late Roman period whose biography is preserved mainly in medieval hagiography rather than in contemporary documents. Tradition places her birth in the third century in a Christian family at Thebes in Egypt. The principal Latin life, the Vita Verenae, was composed in the ninth century and attaches her to the Theban Legion, the legendary corps of Egyptian Christian soldiers said to have been martyred under the Emperor Maximian at Agaunum (today Saint-Maurice in the Valais). In that account she either accompanied the legion or was bound to one of its members; after the massacre she remained in the region of the Swiss plateau and the upper Rhine. Modern historians treat the legionary connection as legendary and regard the vita as a pious construction around an earlier local cult, but they accept that veneration of Verena was firmly established at Zurzach by the early Middle Ages.

After the supposed martyrdom of the legionaries, Verena is said to have gone first to Solothurn (Roman Salodurum), where other Theban soldiers, including Saints Ursus and Victor, were later honoured. There she lived as a hermit in a cave in the gorge that came to bear her name, the Verenaschlucht. When her companions were dead she moved north to Tenedo, the Roman settlement that became Zurzach on the Rhine. At Zurzach she settled as an anchoress and devoted herself to prayer and to works of mercy. Medieval narratives stress that she cared for the poor and the sick, washing their hair and attending to their cleanliness; the comb and the jug of water became her characteristic attributes in art. She is also credited with converting local people to Christianity and with a life of fasting and solitude.

Hagiographical sources relate that a local official imprisoned her because of her faith and her influence among the population, and that she was miraculously sustained while in custody. After her release she continued her eremitical life at Zurzach until her death, which tradition assigns to 1 September in the mid-fourth century, commonly given as 344. She was buried at Zurzach, and a church rose over her grave. That church developed into the Verenamünster in Bad Zurzach, a major pilgrimage church of Alemannic Switzerland and southern Germany in the High Middle Ages, when her relics were translated and her cult was widely promoted.

Her feast is kept on 1 September. She is invoked as patron of nurses, fishermen, millers, housewives, young women, maidservants, and the poor, and against eye diseases; she is also the patron of Zurzach itself. Hermitages, parish churches, and place-names dedicated to her, including the Verena gorge near Solothurn, attest to the strength of her medieval following. She remains one of the most popular female saints of German-speaking Switzerland, even though almost every narrative detail of her life rests on later legend rather than on fourth-century evidence.
