Biography

Short Description

Virgil of Salzburg (Irish Fergil or Fearghal; Latin Vergilius) was an eighth-century Irish monk, scholar, and bishop whose career linked the learned monastic culture of Ireland with the Bavarian church. He came of a noble Irish family, later tradition connecting him with the Uí Néill, though the exact genealogy is not independently verified. Formed in the Irish monastic schools, he acquired a reputation for learning in computus, astronomy, and geography that later earned him the byname of the Geometer. He is traditionally identified as abbot of Aghaboe in Osraige, in what is now County Laois, before he took the Irish pilgrim's road of exile. In the 740s he crossed to the Frankish world, spent time at the court of Pepin, then mayor of the palace, and entered Bavaria, where Duke Odilo installed him as abbot of Saint Peter's monastery at Salzburg, the foundation of Saint Rupert.

From the abbacy Virgil governed the church of Salzburg for many years before he was consecrated bishop. His Irish customs and his scientific opinions brought him into a well-documented clash with Saint Boniface, the papal legate in the German lands. Boniface complained of irregularities in ordination and accused Virgil of teaching that there were antipodes—other men living on the opposite side of the earth. Pope Zachary, writing in the late 740s, directed that if Virgil truly taught another world with other inhabitants beneath the earth he should be called to account. Virgil was not removed from office; the episode remains one of the principal witnesses to cosmological debate in the eighth-century Latin West. He received episcopal consecration in the 760s, in the time of Duke Tassilo III of Bavaria. Salzburg was then a bishopric; it became an archbishopric only under his successor Arno, after Virgil's death.

As bishop he rebuilt the cathedral of Salzburg on a substantially larger plan and consecrated it in the 770s. He organized a mission to the Slavic population of Carantania, sending the chorepiscopus Modestus and other clergy to preach, baptize, and found churches in the Alpine and eastern marches; Salzburg tradition therefore remembers him as an apostle of those peoples. He sustained the monastic and cathedral schools, the scriptorium, and the liturgical life of the see, transmitting Irish and Frankish learning in Bavaria. He died at Salzburg on 27 November 784 and was buried in the cathedral he had rebuilt.

Pope Gregory IX canonized him in 1233. Thereafter he was venerated at Salzburg alongside Saint Rupert as a principal patron of the city and of the diocese. His feast is observed on 27 November. Relics associated with him are kept in Salzburg Cathedral. The continental portion of his life is attested in papal correspondence, Bavarian ducal context, and the later Salzburg historical tradition; the Irish years remain largely a matter of monastic memory and later hagiography.
