Biography

Short Description

Vicelinus (also Vicelin, Vizelin, or Wisselinus) was a German priest and bishop of the twelfth century, venerated as a saint and commonly called the Apostle of Holstein. He was born at Hameln in Saxony, a date conventionally given as about 1086. Orphaned while still young, he was educated at the cathedral school of Paderborn, then a leading centre of learning in Saxony, and later taught, including at Bremen. He subsequently went to France to continue his studies in the schools of the early twelfth century, among them the scholarly circle associated with Laon. Those years formed him as a clerk of some learning before he turned to missionary work on the northern frontier of the German kingdom.

In the 1120s Vicelinus entered the missionary field among the Slavic Wends of Holstein, Wagria, and the lower Elbe. He received priestly ordination and a missionary mandate in connection with the Saxon archbishops; accounts associate his ordination with Norbert of Xanten, archbishop of Magdeburg, and his commission to the Slavic mission with Adalbero of Hamburg-Bremen. The region had already seen earlier missions that had been largely undone by pagan reaction and political collapse in the eleventh century. Vicelinus began work under the protection of local rulers when conditions allowed, preaching and founding churches among remaining Christian Saxons and among pagan Slavs.

His most durable foundation was the house of canons at Faldera, later called Neumünster, established in the later 1120s as a base for clergy living in community. He also laboured at Lübeck and, after Emperor Lothair III constructed a fortress at Segeberg in the 1130s, promoted a religious community there. These houses, organized in the manner of regular canons, supplied priests for a thinly Christianized countryside. Progress was uneven. The deaths of friendly Slavic princes, raids, and the wider conflict known as the Wendish Crusade of 1147 repeatedly scattered congregations and destroyed churches. Vicelinus was remembered for persistence and for a relatively pastoral approach compared with purely military conversion.

In 1149 he was consecrated bishop of Oldenburg in Holstein, restoring an episcopal see that had long been ineffective on the frontier. He continued to make Neumünster his principal residence. A few years later, around 1152, he was struck by paralysis, generally described as the result of a stroke, and could no longer travel. He died at Neumünster on 12 December 1154 and was buried in the church of the community he had founded. The principal near-contemporary account of his life and of the Slavic mission is the Chronica Slavorum of Helmold of Bosau, a priest formed in the tradition of Vicelinus’s foundations.

After his death Vicelinus was honoured as a saint in the churches of Holstein and northern Saxony. His feast day is 12 December. There is no well-attested act of papal canonization in the later juridical sense; his cult rests on medieval local veneration of a missionary bishop. He is remembered above all for laying institutional and pastoral foundations for Christianity in Holstein, even though the fuller conversion of the western Baltic Slavs and the German settlement of the region continued for decades after his death.
