Biography

Short Description

Vicente Bernedo was a Spanish Dominican friar and missionary who worked in the Andean highlands of the Viceroyalty of Peru in the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries. He was born in 1562 in Calatayud, in the Kingdom of Aragon. He entered the Order of Preachers, which in that period combined a strong scholastic and contemplative tradition with an active missionary role in Spanish America. After his religious formation and ordination in Spain he was assigned to the Dominican province of Peru, where the order already maintained convents and indigenous doctrinas.

His principal field of labor was the Collao, the high plateau around Lake Titicaca, inhabited mainly by Aymara-speaking peoples. The Dominican house at Juli, on the southern shore of the lake, was a major missionary center from which friars served surrounding settlements. Bernedo spent many years in this harsh altiplano environment, occupied with preaching, catechesis, and the sacraments. Later Dominican chronicles portray him as austere, given to prayer and penance, and concerned to evangelize the local population. Those portraits follow the conventional hagiographical style of colonial religious orders; independent archival confirmation of many particular episodes is limited.

He died at Juli in 1619. A pious memory of him persisted locally and within the Order of Preachers, and later writers sometimes called him an apostle of the Collao. Interest in a possible cause of beatification has been noted at times among Dominicans and in the church of the Puno region. He has not been beatified or canonized by the Holy See, does not appear with an official feast in the Roman Martyrology, and has no formally approved patronages.

The historical record of his life is relatively sparse. He does not belong to the small group of colonial missionaries whose careers were documented in extensive contemporary processes or printed biographies. What can be stated with reasonable confidence is that he was a Spanish Dominican associated with the important mission center at Juli, that he labored among the indigenous communities of the Lake Titicaca basin, and that a reputation for holiness attached to his memory after his death. Fuller details of his family, studies, and day-to-day ministry remain poorly documented.
