Biography

Short Description

Vicente Galbis Gironés was a Spanish Roman Catholic prelate of the twentieth century who served as Bishop of Albacete. He was born in 1910 in Valencia, on Spain’s eastern Mediterranean coast. He was formed for the priesthood in the ecclesiastical structures of the Archdiocese of Valencia and was ordained a priest in 1934. His first years of ministry unfolded against the backdrop of the Second Spanish Republic, the Spanish Civil War of 1936–1939, and the long Franco dictatorship that followed. Available historical notices do not preserve a detailed personal account of his wartime or immediate postwar experiences, which was not uncommon for diocesan clergy of that generation whose lives were recorded mainly through later official appointments rather than memoirs.

For more than three decades he remained a priest of the Archdiocese of Valencia, exercising the ordinary pastoral duties of secular clergy. In 1968 Pope Paul VI appointed him Bishop of Albacete, a diocese in Castilla-La Mancha that had been erected in the mid-twentieth century. He received episcopal consecration the same year and governed that see until 1982. His episcopate therefore covered the closing years of the Franco regime, the death of Francisco Franco in 1975, and Spain’s transition to parliamentary democracy, as well as the continuing local implementation of the liturgical, pastoral, and institutional reforms of the Second Vatican Council, which had ended only a few years before he became a bishop.

As ordinary of Albacete he was responsible for the clergy, parishes, and Catholic institutions of the diocese during a period of social change, internal migration, and gradual secularization in Spanish society. He resigned the see in 1982 and thereafter held the title of bishop emeritus. He died in 1994 in Albacete. He belonged to the diocesan (secular) clergy rather than to a religious order. In keeping with the discipline of clerical celibacy in the Latin Church he was not married and had no children. He never occupied the see of Rome or any patriarchal throne of the Eastern churches. He has not been beatified or canonized, and no feast day or patronages are attached to his name.
