Biography

Short Description

Vicinius of Sarsina, known in Italian as San Vicinio, is venerated as a saint of the Catholic Church and as the first bishop of Sarsina, a town in the Apennines of Emilia-Romagna in north-central Italy. Contemporary documentation of his life is lacking, as is common for many local saints of late antiquity, and the surviving picture depends on later diocesan tradition and hagiography. He is placed in the fourth century. According to traditional accounts he was of Eastern origin: some versions describe him as Greek, others as coming from Dalmatia. He is said to have come into the territory of Sarsina and to have lived for a time as a hermit in a cave on the height afterward called Monte San Vicinio, near the town, in austerity and prayer.

Local tradition holds that after this eremitical period he was chosen bishop of Sarsina and became the first historically remembered occupant of that see. As bishop he is remembered for pastoral care, preaching, and a reputation for holiness rather than for any surviving writings or datable public acts. A distinctive element of his cult is an iron chain, the catena di San Vicinio, which he is said to have worn about his body as a penitential discipline. The chain is preserved as a relic at Sarsina and has long been applied to the sick. Devotees have especially sought his intercession in cases of mental and nervous illness and in cases believed to involve demonic oppression or possession.

He is commemorated on 28 August, the traditional date of his death. Later sources often assign that death to about the year 330, a figure that belongs to conventional hagiographic chronology rather than to an independently verifiable contemporary record. His relics are kept in the cathedral of Sarsina, the Basilica Cattedrale di San Vicinio (also associated with the Annunciation). He is the principal patron saint of Sarsina and has been closely identified with the historic Diocese of Sarsina, which in modern times was united with Cesena as the Diocese of Cesena-Sarsina.

The cult of Vicinius has remained strongly local. Pilgrims continue to visit the cathedral and the mountain associated with his hermitage, and the chain relic remains central to popular devotion. The Roman Martyrology records him as bishop of Sarsina. Because the earliest narrative layers of his legend were written long after the fourth century, historians treat biographical details beyond his episcopal title, his local cult, and the approximate period of his life with caution. His veneration is nonetheless ancient in the region and has been an enduring part of the religious identity of Sarsina.
