Biography

Short Description

Victoire Rasoamanarivo was born in 1848 in Antananarivo, the highland capital of the Merina kingdom of Madagascar. She belonged to a family of the local aristocracy; her father was Rainiandriantsilavo and her mother Rambahinoro. Raised at first in the traditional religious environment of the Merina courtly class, she came into contact with Catholic Christianity through the schools of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Cluny, who had been allowed to work in the capital in the mid-nineteenth century. Under their influence she asked for baptism and was received into the Catholic Church on 1 November 1863, taking the Christian name Victoire.

In 1864 she was married, in a match arranged according to the customs of her rank, to Ratsimatahodriaka, a man of comparable standing who was also known as Justin. The marriage was a source of prolonged suffering. Her husband drank heavily and treated her with cruelty; he did not share her faith in any serious way. Members of her family pressed her to abandon the union and to resume traditional practice, but she refused on the ground that Christian marriage was indissoluble. She remained with her husband, seeking his conversion by patience and prayer. The couple had no children. Ratsimatahodriaka died in 1888; Catholic accounts of her life report that she nursed him in his last illness and that he was reconciled to the Church before death.

The 1880s brought a severe trial to Madagascar’s Catholics. During the conflict with France, foreign missionaries were expelled from 1883, and the Catholic community was left for several years without priests. In that interval Victoire became one of the principal lay leaders of the Church in Antananarivo. She visited Catholics who had been imprisoned, supported those tempted to apostatize, and helped to maintain prayer, catechesis, and a sense of ecclesial communion among the remaining faithful. When the missionaries were able to return later in the decade, they found that the community had not disintegrated. She subsequently served as president of a Catholic lay association often referred to as the Catholic Union, continuing to work for the instruction and encouragement of the laity.

Victoire Rasoamanarivo died in Antananarivo on 21 August 1894. She was beatified by Pope John Paul II on 30 April 1989, during the pope’s apostolic journey to Madagascar, and thus became the first Malagasy Catholic to be beatified. Her liturgical memorial is kept on 21 August. She is remembered especially as a laywoman who held fast to her baptismal faith under domestic hardship and public pressure, and who helped to sustain the Catholic community in Madagascar when its clergy had been driven out.
