Biography

Short Description

Victorinus of Pettau, known in Latin as Victorinus Petavionensis or Victorinus Poetovionensis, was bishop of Poetovio, a Roman city in Pannonia Superior corresponding to modern Ptuj in Slovenia. He flourished in the later third century and is the earliest Latin biblical commentator whose work can still be studied in any substantial form. Contemporary biographical detail is extremely scarce. The principal ancient notice is the brief chapter that Saint Jerome devoted to him in De viris illustribus, written near the end of the fourth century. Jerome states that Victorinus was bishop of Poetovio, that he was more at home in Greek than in Latin, and that he died a martyr. Later writers sometimes inferred from the linguistic remark that Victorinus was a Greek by birth, but Jerome does not actually say so, and his origin remains unknown.

Jerome lists an extensive body of exegetical and polemical writing: commentaries on Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Isaiah, Ezekiel, Habakkuk, Ecclesiastes, the Song of Songs, the Gospel of Matthew, and the Apocalypse, together with a work Against All Heresies. Only the Commentary on the Apocalypse has survived in a nearly complete state. It is the oldest extant Latin commentary on the Book of Revelation and shows clear dependence on earlier Greek tradition, especially Irenaeus of Lyons and, to a lesser extent, Origen. The commentary originally contained a frankly millenarian reading of the thousand-year reign of Christ, a view widely held in the second and third centuries but later regarded with suspicion in the Latin West. A recension of the text, often associated with Jerome, appears to have softened or removed some of those chiliastic passages. Scattered fragments and later citations give only a limited impression of the lost commentaries.

Victorinus wrote at a time when Latin Christian literature was still young. His Latin is described by Jerome as lacking polish, a judgment that later readers have generally confirmed, yet the content of his exegesis was valued for its doctrinal substance. He interpreted Scripture in a largely typological and eschatological key, combining a strong interest in prophecy with a concern to refute heresy. His millenarianism, his use of Greek sources, and his position as a Pannonian bishop on the Latin-speaking frontier of the empire make him an important witness to the diversity of third-century Christianity before the Constantinian settlement and the Council of Nicaea.

According to Jerome and the subsequent martyrological tradition, Victorinus was put to death in the Great Persecution that began under the emperors Diocletian and Maximian. The persecution’s first edict against the churches was issued in 303, and Victorinus’s death is conventionally placed in 303 or 304. No contemporary passion narrative survives, so the precise date, place, and manner of his martyrdom are not independently documented. In the late fifth century the so-called Decretum Gelasianum listed some of his writings among works that were not to be received without caution, reflecting lingering unease about millenarian interpretation, yet his status as a martyr-bishop was not in dispute.

Victorinus has been venerated as a saint in the Latin Church from an early date. His name appears in the Roman Martyrology on 2 November. There was no medieval papal canonization of the later formal type; his cult belongs to the ancient, pre-congregation layer of the sanctoral. He is remembered above all as a martyr of the Diocletian persecution and as the first substantial Latin commentator on Scripture, particularly on the Apocalypse. His see of Poetovio, later Pettau, remained a point of local memory in the region that is now Slovenia, even though the details of his life beyond Jerome’s brief notice have been lost.
