Biography

Short Description

Saint Victorinus of Pettau, also called Victorinus of Poetovio (Victorinus Poetovionensis), was a Christian bishop and biblical commentator of the late third century who died a martyr in the Great Persecution under the emperor Diocletian. Almost nothing can be established about his early life. No reliable ancient source records his year or place of birth. Saint Jerome, in De viris illustribus, remarked that Victorinus knew Greek better than Latin; later writers have sometimes taken that observation as evidence of a Greek-speaking origin, but the inference is not confirmed by any contemporary document. What is certain is that he became bishop of Poetovio, a Roman municipium in Pannonia Superior on the Drava, corresponding to the present-day town of Ptuj in Slovenia. The city stood on a major military and commercial route between the Danube frontier and Italy, and a Christian community was already established there by his time.

Jerome attributes to him a substantial body of exegetical writing: commentaries on Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Isaiah, Ezekiel, Habakkuk, Ecclesiastes, the Song of Songs, the Gospel of Matthew, and the Apocalypse, as well as a treatise against all heresies. Of these works only the Commentary on the Apocalypse survives in a form that can be connected with Victorinus, and even that text is known chiefly through a later recension commonly associated with Jerome, who revised passages he found theologically awkward. Victorinus is thus the earliest Latin writer whose biblical commentary is still extant, and his work is a principal witness to Western interpretation of Scripture before the later fourth-century flowering of Latin patristic literature. Jerome judged his Latin inelegant, a verdict modern readers generally share, yet the commentary remains historically important for its structure, its use of earlier Greek authorities, and its eschatology.

Theologically Victorinus belonged to the chiliast or millenarian tradition. He understood the thousand-year reign described in the Book of Revelation in a literal sense, expecting a future earthly kingdom of the saints. Similar views had been held by earlier Christian authors, including Justin Martyr and Irenaeus, but they were increasingly contested in the fourth century. Jerome’s revision of the Apocalypse commentary was motivated in part by a wish to mute or correct this millenarianism. Victorinus shows acquaintance with Papias, Irenaeus, and Hippolytus, and he combined typological and occasionally allegorical reading with a more historical treatment of prophetic texts. His commentary takes the seven churches, seals, trumpets, and bowls of Revelation as a coherent sequence pointing toward the end of the present age and the vindication of the Church.

Victorinus was put to death during the persecution initiated by Diocletian, an event placed by later tradition in 303 or 304, with 304 the date most often given in standard reference works. The precise day and circumstances of his execution are not preserved in contemporary martyr acts; association of his death with Poetovio itself is traditional. He was honoured as a saint from the early centuries of the Church, without a later formal process of canonization. The Roman Martyrology assigns his feast to 2 November. In the history of biblical studies he is remembered as the first Latin exegete whose work can still be read, and as a representative of a Pannonian church that produced both martyrs and theologians on the eve of the Constantinian settlement. The survival of even one commentary, however revised, has secured him a lasting place among the Latin Fathers.
