Biography

Short Description

Vigilius of Trent was bishop of Tridentum (modern Trento) in the late fourth and early fifth centuries and is venerated as a martyr and as the principal patron of the city and church of Trent. Contemporary evidence for his life is limited but real. Two letters associated with his name, written after the killing of three clerics in the Anaunia (Val di Non) in 397 and addressed to Simplicianus of Milan and to John Chrysostom, place him as bishop of Trent at that date and show him in contact with major sees of the Latin and Greek churches. Later narrative, above all the Passio Vigilii, supplies a much fuller story of his origins, missionary work, and death; historians treat that text as hagiography of a later age rather than as an independent contemporary record.

According to the traditional account, Vigilius was born in Rome to a family of senatorial standing. Hagiographical sources name his parents Theodosius and Justa and give him brothers called Claudian and Magorian. He is said to have been educated in Rome and, in some versions, at Athens, before settling in the Trentino. There he was chosen bishop, reports placing the event in the 380s, and consecrated with the involvement of the metropolitan of Aquileia and, in some accounts, of Ambrose of Milan. As bishop he worked to Christianize the Alpine valleys around Trent, where older cults, including the worship of Saturn, were still strong, and he is credited with founding or enlarging the city’s principal church, on a site later occupied by the cathedral that bears his name.

In 397 three missionaries sent into the Val di Non—Sisinnius, Martyrius, and Alexander—were killed at Sanzeno after they opposed local pagan rites. Vigilius recovered their relics, promoted their cult, and wrote to other churches to make their deaths known. The episode is the best-documented moment of his episcopate and shows both how incomplete the conversion of the mountain countryside still was and how he organized missionary work beyond the city. Tradition then holds that he went in person to preach in the Val Rendena, southwest of Trent, destroyed a statue of Saturn by throwing it into the river Sarca, and was beaten to death by the local population with wooden implements. Martyrologies assign the death to 26 June, commonly in the year 405.

His body was brought back to Trent and buried in the church linked to his episcopate. Veneration of Vigilius as patron of Trent is ancient; the cathedral of the city is dedicated to him, and his feast is kept on 26 June. The Roman Martyrology commemorates him as a bishop who was stoned for striving to uproot remaining idolatry. Medieval and early modern writers elaborated the legend of his martyrdom and attributed miracles to his intercession. Modern historical judgment accepts the reality of his episcopate and of his connection with the Anaunian martyrs, while regarding the details of a Roman senatorial birth, the precise manner of his death, and much of the Passio as later hagiographical development rather than as facts established by contemporary evidence. He remains the chief patron saint of Trento and of the Archdiocese of Trento.
