Biography

Short Description

Viktor Ostrovidov, known in secular life as Konstantin Aleksandrovich Ostrovidov, was a bishop of the Russian Orthodox Church and is venerated as a hieromartyr among the New Martyrs and Confessors of Russia. He was born in the village of Zolotoye in the Kamyshin district of the Saratov Governorate, in the Russian Empire, into the family of an Orthodox priest. Raised in a clerical household in the Volga region in the last decades of the nineteenth century, he received a church education, attending theological seminary and later completing studies at a theological academy. After that formation he entered monastic life, receiving the name Victor, and was ordained as a hieromonk. Published sources do not agree on a single birth year, and that date is therefore left unspecified here.

In the years surrounding the Russian Revolution he was consecrated to the episcopate and served as a bishop in the Vyatka region and neighboring territories of the eastern Russian plain, including associations with the sees of Glazov, Izhevsk, and Votkinsk. His ministry unfolded during the first waves of Soviet anti-religious policy, when the Orthodox Church faced confiscation of property, interference in appointments, and the imprisonment of clergy. As a vicar and diocesan bishop he sought to maintain canonical order and pastoral care amid the aftermath of civil war, famine, and mounting state pressure on church life.

Bishop Victor became a leading figure among hierarchs who rejected the 1927 Declaration of Metropolitan Sergius (Stragorodsky), in which the deputy patriarchal locum tenens pledged the loyalty of the church administration to the Soviet government. Aligning with Metropolitan Joseph (Petrovykh) of Petrograd and other so-called non-commemorators, often described as Josephites, he regarded that declaration as an unacceptable compromise with an atheistic regime. This ecclesiastical opposition, together with his continued episcopal activity, led to repeated arrests by the Soviet secret police in the late 1920s and early 1930s. He was subjected to imprisonment, interrogation, and administrative exile.

In his final years he was sent to the remote north, to the Komi region. He died on 2 May 1934 in the village of Neritsa in the Ust-Tsilma district of the Komi Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic, while living under conditions of exile. The Russian Orthodox Church glorified him as a hieromartyr at the Jubilee Council of Bishops in 2000. He is commemorated on 19 April according to the Julian calendar, in the Synaxis of the New Martyrs and Confessors of the Russian Church, and among the saints of the Saratov land. Orthodox hagiography presents his life as an example of episcopal resistance to state control of the Church in the early Soviet period.
