Biography
Vinçenc Prennushi was born Nikollë Prennushi in 1885 in Shkodër, the principal Catholic city of northern Albania, then within the Ottoman Empire. He entered the Order of Friars Minor and took the religious name Vinçenc. After Franciscan formation and studies that included houses of the order in Central Europe, he was ordained a priest and returned to pastoral and cultural work in Albania. In the early twentieth century he belonged to the Franciscan intellectual milieu of Shkodër, which had a large part in Albanian-language schooling, journalism, and literature. Prennushi wrote verse, gathered popular traditions, and contributed to Catholic periodicals, and he is counted among the clerical writers who helped shape modern Albanian Catholic culture.
He later held responsibility within the Albanian Franciscan province and, in the 1930s, was appointed to the episcopate. He served as Bishop of Sapë in the north of the country and was then named Archbishop of Durrës, the Latin metropolitan see on the Adriatic. That office made him the senior Latin-rite Catholic prelate in Albania during the Italian occupation, the Second World War, and the first years of communist rule. The Catholic community was a minority, strongest in the north, and its bishops had to deal with successive occupations and a swiftly changing political order.
From 1944 the government of Enver Hoxha set out to isolate, subordinate, and ultimately suppress organized religion. Catholic bishops were pressed to break communion with Rome and to accept a state-controlled national church. Prennushi was treated as a political enemy, arrested in the later 1940s, interrogated, and tortured. A communist court condemned him on charges typical of the period, including hostility to the regime and alleged ties to foreign powers. He died in 1949 in prison in Durrës from the effects of torture and the conditions of detention.
His death belonged to a wider persecution in which Albanian bishops, diocesan and religious priests, Franciscans and members of other orders, and lay Catholics were imprisoned, executed, or worked to death, especially as the state moved toward official atheism. After the end of communist rule the Holy See examined these cases together. On 5 November 2016, in Shkodër, thirty-eight martyrs of the Albanian Church, including Archbishop Prennushi, were beatified with the authorization of Pope Francis. He is venerated as a blessed of the Catholic Church: a Franciscan bishop who remained faithful until death, and a representative figure both of Albanian Catholic letters and of the Church’s suffering under the Hoxha dictatorship.
