Biography

Short Description

Vincent Tường, whose name appears in Vietnamese Catholic usage as Vinh Sơn Tường, is a sparsely documented figure associated with Wikidata identifier Q9375123. The baptismal name Vincent (Vinh Sơn) has been widely used among Vietnamese Catholics since the early modern missions, recalling both the deacon-martyr Vincent of Saragossa and Vincent de Paul; Tường is a Vietnamese personal or family name. That onomastic pattern points to a person formed in Vietnamese Catholic culture, but it does not by itself establish a birthplace, a century of activity, or an ecclesiastical rank. Widely consulted martyrologies, episcopal catalogues, and standard biographical dictionaries do not supply a verified year of birth or death for this individual, and no reliable source in the available historical record substitutes an office-taking date for a nativity date.

Vietnamese Catholicism, from the seventeenth-century Jesuit and Dominican missions through the Paris Foreign Missions Society and the Nguyễn-dynasty era, produced clergy, catechists, and lay faithful who often combined a European baptismal name with a Vietnamese name. Many such persons appear in diocesan necrologies, colonial-period reports, or the dossiers of the 117 Vietnamese Martyrs canonized in 1988. Vincent Tường does not emerge with certainty from those well-known lists under this exact form of the name. He is not identifiable as Bishop of Rome, nor as patriarch or catholicos of an Orthodox, Oriental Orthodox, Coptic, or Church of the East see. No verified affiliation with a religious order, no documented spouse or children, and no securely attributed burial place can be stated without conjecture.

Because the subject is obscure in published Western and general reference sources, claims about patronage, a liturgical feast day, beatification, or canonization cannot be substantiated. Local Vietnamese parish histories, diocesan archives, or the bibliographic references attached to the Wikidata item itself may contain further detail, but those materials are not corroborated here. In the absence of such confirmation, cities and countries of birth and death, marital status, and any role as a confessor or martyr remain unknown. The cautious course is to record the name, the male gender indicated by the baptismal name Vincent, and the negative facts that he was neither pope nor patriarch, and to leave remaining fields empty rather than infer them from analogy with better-known Vietnamese Catholics of similar names.

Further biographical reconstruction would require primary evidence: baptismal or ordination registers, contemporary letters, trial records if he lived under persecution, or an authoritative hagiographical notice. Until such evidence is verified, Vincent Tường should be treated as a named individual in the Vietnamese Catholic onomastic tradition whose life dates, places, and offices are not established in the reliable historical sources consulted.
