Biography

Short Description

Vincenzo Grossi was born on 9 March 1845 in Pizzighettone, in the province of Cremona in northern Italy, the youngest of seven children of Baldassare Grossi, a miller, and Maddalena Capellini. He was baptized on the day of his birth. Raised in a devout family of modest means, he discerned a priestly vocation in childhood and entered the diocesan seminary of Cremona. He was ordained a priest on 22 May 1869. In the years that followed he served as a curate, first at Regona and later at Vicobellignano, both in the Cremona countryside.

In 1883 he was appointed parish priest of Vicobellignano, an office he held until his death more than three decades later. As pastor he was known for humility, simplicity of life, and close attention to the spiritual and material needs of his parishioners, especially children, the poor, and the sick. He devoted particular energy to catechesis and to the Christian education of the young. His preaching and pastoral method were practical rather than rhetorical, and he sought holiness in the ordinary duties of diocesan priesthood rather than in extraordinary works.

Concern for the formation of girls, especially those of limited means, led him in 1885 to found the Institute of the Daughters of the Oratory (Figlie dell'Oratorio). The congregation was intended to provide religious instruction, schooling, and an oratory-style apostolate for young women. Grossi formed the first sisters in a spirit of humility, fidelity to the will of God in daily circumstances, and active charity. He continued to serve as parish priest while directing the new community, which in time received diocesan approval and later pontifical recognition and extended its educational and youth work beyond its original setting.

Grossi spent his remaining years at Vicobellignano, combining parish ministry with the spiritual care of his foundation. He endured recurring poor health with patience. In early November 1917 he contracted pneumonia and died on 7 November 1917 in Vicobellignano, at the age of seventy-two. He was already regarded by many contemporaries as a priest of notable holiness.

A cause for beatification was later introduced. Pope Paul VI beatified him on 1 November 1975. Pope Francis canonized him on 18 October 2015 in Saint Peter's Square in Rome. The Catholic Church observes his feast on 7 November, the anniversary of his death. He is remembered as a model of the diocesan priest in late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century Italy and as the founder of the Daughters of the Oratory.
