Biography

Short Description

Vindemial (also known as Vindemialis) was a fifth-century Catholic bishop of Capsa in the Roman province of Byzacena in North Africa. Capsa corresponds to modern Gafsa in Tunisia and had been a Christian episcopal see since late antiquity. Almost nothing can be established about his family, education, date of birth, or the circumstances of his consecration. He is known to history almost solely through later liturgical commemoration of his death in the Arian persecution conducted by the Vandal rulers of Africa.

The Vandals, a Germanic people who professed Arian Christianity, had seized the Roman provinces of North Africa in the 430s and captured Carthage in 439. Under King Geiseric the Catholic (Nicene) Church was already restricted, but pressure intensified under his successor Huneric, who reigned from 477 until his death in December 484. Huneric sought to impose Arianism on the Catholic hierarchy. In early 484 he summoned Catholic bishops to a conference at Carthage, opened on 1 February, which was followed by an edict of 25 February 484 commanding conversion to Arianism on pain of exile, confiscation, torture, and death.

According to the tradition preserved in the Roman Martyrology, Vindemial was one of three African bishops—together with Longinus and Eugene—who were put to death by the sword for refusing to abandon the Catholic faith. The precise place of execution is not recorded. The principal contemporary narrative of these events, the History of the Vandal Persecution by Victor of Vita, describes in detail the sufferings inflicted on Catholic clergy in 484, including beatings, mutilations, and banishment into the desert, and thereby supplies the historical setting for the martyrdoms later grouped in the martyrologies, even though it does not isolate every name. The year 484 is the date conventionally assigned to their deaths, coinciding with Huneric’s edict and the height of the violence; Huneric himself died later that same year.

Vindemial has been venerated as a martyr in the Catholic Church. His feast is observed on 2 May, often jointly with Longinus and Eugene. Like other saints of the patristic age he was never the subject of a formal papal canonization of the later medieval type; recognition rested on ancient cult and inscription in the martyrologies. No reliable information survives about his burial, and no particular patronages of places, professions, illnesses, or groups are customarily attached to his name. He remains an obscure figure whose memory principally attests to the endurance of the Nicene episcopate in Byzacena and neighboring African provinces under Vandal Arian rule.
