Biography

Short Description

Angela Merici was born in 1474 at Desenzano del Garda, a town on the southwestern shore of Lake Garda in northern Italy, then within the territories of the Republic of Venice. She came from a moderately prosperous farming family; her father, Giovanni Merici, was remembered for his piety and for reading the lives of the saints to his children. Angela was orphaned in adolescence after the deaths of her parents and, according to traditional accounts, of a beloved sister. She was taken into the household of an uncle at Salò. The sudden death of her sister without the last sacraments left a lasting mark on her, and later hagiography records a vision in which she saw her sister among a company of virgins in glory. In these years she embraced prayer, fasting, and works of mercy and was received as a tertiary of the Franciscan Third Order, which allowed her to pursue a consecrated life while remaining in the world rather than entering a cloister.

After the death of her uncle she returned to Desenzano and, according to early biographers, gathered local girls in her family home to teach them the elements of Christian doctrine. In the mid-1510s she was invited to Brescia, a city then recovering from war, plague, and social disruption, where she entered circles of devout laypeople associated with Catholic reform. There she devoted herself to the care of the poor, the consolation of the bereaved, and especially the Christian education of girls, whose formation she regarded as essential to the renewal of family and civic life. Brescia remained the center of her activity for the rest of her life.

In 1524 Angela undertook a pilgrimage to the Holy Land. Traditional accounts state that she was struck blind while on the island of Crete yet insisted on completing the journey to the holy places, and that her sight was restored on the return voyage. The following year she traveled to Rome for the Jubilee of 1525 and was received by Pope Clement VII, who, impressed by her reputation for holiness, is said to have wished her to remain in Rome; she declined in order to continue her work in Lombardy. On 25 November 1535, in Brescia, she and twenty-eight companions formally constituted the Company of Saint Ursula, placing themselves under the patronage of the legendary virgin-martyr Ursula. The company was a novel institute: its members did not enter a cloister or take public solemn vows in the monastic manner, but lived in their own homes or with their families, wore no distinctive religious habit, and bound themselves by a rule of virginity, poverty of spirit, and obedience, with the education of girls and the practice of charity as their principal works. Angela was chosen as mother and mistress of the company and composed a rule and counsels that emphasized interior conversion, flexibility of structure, and service in the midst of ordinary social life.

Angela Merici died in Brescia on 27 January 1540. She was buried in the church of Saint Afra, later rededicated as the church of Saint Angela Merici, where her tomb became a place of local veneration. The Company of Saint Ursula spread in subsequent decades; under the influence of Saint Charles Borromeo and others it developed in some regions into a cloistered teaching order, the Ursulines, which became one of the principal forces in the Catholic education of girls in early modern Europe and later overseas. Angela was beatified by Pope Clement XIII in 1768 and canonized by Pope Pius VII in 1807. Her feast is kept on 27 January. She is invoked as a patron of educators, of those who have lost parents, of the sick, and of people with disabilities. Historians regard her as a significant figure in sixteenth-century Catholic reform, notable for devising a form of consecrated life for women adapted to apostolic work in the world rather than to enclosure.
