Biography

Short Description

Saint Aurea (also rendered Aura or Aure) was a seventh-century abbess in Paris, commemorated in the Roman Martyrology as a virgin. Almost nothing can be established about her family, birthplace, or early years from sources close to her lifetime. Later tradition sometimes claims a Syrian origin, but that detail does not appear in the earliest surviving notices and cannot be treated as historical. She belongs to the generation of Merovingian monastic founders associated with Saint Eligius (Eloi), the goldsmith and later bishop of Noyon-Tournai, and with Saint Ouen of Rouen, who wrote Eligius’s Life.

According to that Life, Eligius established a monastery for women in Paris dedicated to Saint Martial of Limoges and placed Aurea over it as abbess. The community is described in hagiographical texts as numbering some three hundred nuns; such round figures are conventional in the period and should not be read as a census. The house followed the mixed monastic customs then current in Neustria rather than a single later-defined religious order. Aurea’s role was therefore that of a virgin abbess governing a large urban convent under royal and episcopal patronage in the decades around the middle of the seventh century.

Tradition records that a severe outbreak of plague struck Paris in 666 and that Aurea died in the epidemic together with a great many of her nuns (later accounts speak of one hundred and sixty). The date 4 October became her feast. The monastery of Saint-Martial continued after her death; her relics were kept there for centuries. The church and convent were eventually destroyed in the course of Parisian urban change, and portions of the relics were translated to other churches in the city. Devotion to her remained essentially local.

Because contemporary documentation is thin, much of what later legendaries repeat about Aurea cannot be independently verified. She is nonetheless a representative figure of early Frankish female monasticism: an abbess whose memory was preserved through the cult of Saint Eligius, the liturgical books of Paris, and the Roman Martyrology’s entry for 4 October. No reliable ancient source attributes to her a husband or children; she is uniformly presented as a consecrated virgin. She was never Bishop of Rome or a patriarch, and her cult is of the ancient, pre-congregational type.
