Biography

Short Description

The holy Virgin Martyr Charitina is known from the Byzantine liturgical tradition as a Christian who suffered at Amisus in Pontus, on the southern shore of the Black Sea in Asia Minor, during the persecution under the emperor Diocletian. Later Greek synaxaria and menologia assign her death to the year 304. No contemporary Roman administrative record or early passio independent of the medieval liturgical collections has been identified, so the details of her life rest on this hagiographical tradition rather than on documents that a modern historian could corroborate independently. She is nonetheless firmly established in the calendar of the Orthodox Church and appears, with some variation of place, in Western martyrologies as well.

According to the received account, Charitina was orphaned while still a child and was received into the house of a prominent Christian of Amisus named Claudius. Raised in piety, she became noted for meekness, humility, and obedience. She gave herself to prayer and fasting and, though young, spoke of Christ to those around her and is said to have brought a number of pagans to the faith. In the climate created by Diocletian's edicts against the Church, such activity was dangerous. The governor, named Domitius in the texts, learned of her and ordered her arrest.

Brought to trial, Charitina refused to sacrifice to the gods and confessed Jesus Christ. The martyrdom narrative then follows a sequence of tortures typical of later epic passions: her hair was torn from her head; her fingers, and in some versions her toes, were severed; she was cast into the sea with a stone about her neck and, the story relates, was preserved from death by an angel. She was subsequently thrown into a vessel of boiling pitch or a similar torment and emerged unharmed. In a last assault her teeth were broken out and her breasts cut off. Granted a moment to pray, she commended her soul to God and died, thus completing her witness. The precise legal circumstances of the execution cannot be recovered; the tradition presents her as a virgin who remained faithful unto death.

Charitina is commemorated as a virgin martyr on 5 October in the Byzantine rite. Medieval Latin martyrologies also list a Saint Charitina, virgin and martyr, on that date, sometimes locating her at Rome rather than at Amisus; whether the Roman notice is a displacement of the Pontic saint or a separate cult is uncertain. No historically secure information survives about the place of her burial or the later fate of relics. She has not acquired a large or well-documented set of specialized patronages. Her memory is preserved principally in the liturgical books of the Christian East, where she stands among the many named and unnamed martyrs of the Diocletianic persecution in Asia Minor.
